تعيش بلا قلب أتحيا بلا قلب

وفي مصر ما يغوى القلوب وما يسبي

فإن حياة المرء في صبوة اللب

O wise one, you live without saying “That is a misstep”

For a person's life is in the fervor of mind

أترغب في عيش بسيط منزّه

عن الإثم في دار الصبابة والحوب

Do you wish for a modest life cleansed

Of sin in the abode of youth and love?

أيرضيك أن تلقى المنادى قائلاً

فتىً ميتُ الإحساس عاش بلا ذنب

Would it satisfy you if the caller said

“A spiritless lad lived without fault” ?

وكيف وفي برديك روح فتيّةٌ

تساكنها الأشواق جنباً إلى جنب

How so, when in your chest rests a youthful soul

Inhabited by passions, side by side?
