ولَّى شبابك لم ننعم بنضرته

ولم نفز من تمنينا بمأمولِ

Your youth has passed, we did not enjoy its freshness

Nor did we attain what we yearned for.

فما ادّكار عهود منك ما ظفرت

فيها الأماني بوعد غير ممطولِ

So do not recall promises you did not keep,

In which desires found no fulfilled vows.

أيام تعصفُ بالأحشاءِ داميةً

بناظر من بقايا السحر مكحولِ

Days rage in our souls like bloodshed

With the gaze of the remnants of sorcery made drunk.

وتستطيل علينا في صبابتنا

بمائسٍ مترفِ الأعطاف مطلولِ

And they drag on before us in our prime

With the stance of one accustomed to ease, hands unbound.

يا قلبُ هذي رسوم الحسن موحشةً

في مهمهٍ طامس الأعلام مجهولِ

Oh heart, these are the traces of transient beauty

In obscurity, with faded banners, untraceable.

فاندب رجاءك في دنيا وعدت بها

أحلها الدهر مغنى غير مأهولِ

So mourn your dashed hopes in a world that promised

What fate made into unrealized songs.

لا تلمح العينُ في شتّى جوانبهِ

إلا نوازى قلب فيه مكبولِ

The eye does not glimpse in its every aspect

Except narrow straits where a heart is fettered.

ولا ينال المعنى من مشاهده

إلا عوادي حزن جدّ موصولِ

Nor does the mind attain from its visions

Except the visitations of sadness, continuously bound.

يا من تشفّعَ ما ضيه لحاضره

بواضحٍ من جميل العذر مقبولِ

O you who interceded for what is past with what is present

With manifest, acceptable justification,

ليغفر الحبّ ما أسلفت من صلفٍ

إلى محبٍّ معنّى القلب متبولِ

May love forgive what insolence I committed

To a lover whose inner heart is devoted to me.

فقد نعمنا على ذكراك آونةً

بسائغ من نمير الوصل معسولِ

For we delighted, remembering you for a time,

With the sweetest gentle communion.

واليوم نعبد في نجواك وادعةً

أطلال حسنٍ لمن يهواك مبذولِ

And today we worship in your seclusion willingly,

Ruins of a beauty offered freely to its lover.
