    كأنى وحيدٌ في الوجود بلا أهل

    Eighty days passed, lost is their bliss

    As if I were alone in existence without kith or kin

  3. تغرّبتُ في الدنيا لغربة داركم

    وإن اغتراب القلب ضربٌ من القتل

    I became a stranger in the world due to your home’s estrangement

    And estrangement of the heart is a kind of murder

  4. تعالوا أغيثوني من الوجد ليلةً

    ولا تبخلوا يا أجود الناس بالبُخلِ

    Come relieve me of passion one night

    Do not be stingy, O most generous people

  5. تمردت الدنيا عليّ وأقفرت

    فلم يبق لي في غير دارتكم وردُ

    The world has rebelled against me and become desolate

    So naught remains for me save your home, O rose

  6. إذا ثار وجدى قلت تلك بقية

    من العيش يحييني بها ذلك الوجد

    When my fervor is aroused, I say that is but

    A remnant of life keeping me alive through passion

  7. أسائل عنكم حاسديكم كأنني

    مضيتُ وما لي من مودتكم عهد

    I ask your envious people about you as if

    I passed away not bound by your affection anymore

  8. أصورتكم هذي وأنتم بروضةٍ

    يموج بها التفاح والاس والورد

    I pictured you in the garden

    Where apples, myrtle, and roses flow

  9. تذكرت يوم المهرجان حديثكم

    فأبدعت ما أبدعت والحب يبدعُ

    I recalled the festival day, your talk

    So I created the finest poetry, and love is creative

  10. تذكرت أني كنت يوماً خليلكم

    وأنتم إلى صدرى من النور أسرع

    I recalled I was once your confidant

    And you were swifter to my bosom than light

  11. تذكرت ما كنا عليه فسارعت

    إلى مدمعي من ثورة الحزن أدمعُ

    I recalled our condition, so I hastened

    With the turmoil of sorrow, my tears flowed

  12. فإن لم تعودوا طائعين فإنني

    إلى داركم بالرغم منكم سأرجع

    If you do not heed me willingly, then I

    Shall return to your home defiantly

  13. ثمانون يوماً والوجود بأسره

    ظلامٌ كثيفٌ لا يلوح به نجمُ

    Eighty days and the whole existence

    Is profound darkness with no star in sight

  14. إذا غبتمو عني فما لي من الربى

    إذا ازدهرت صبحاً نصيبٌ ولا سهم

    When you are absent from me among people

    I have no luck or fortune should morning bloom

  15. ملاعبُ ضاعت من يدي بعد بينكم

    فلم يبق منها غير ما يخلق الوهم

    The playgrounds have slipped my hands after you

    Naught remains of them but what fancy creates

  16. تعالوا تعالوا إنني في انتظاركم

    وعندي الحديثُ العذب والراح والفعمُ

    Come, come, I await you

    And I have the sweetest discourse, comfort, and vim

  17. تذكرت يوم اسكندرية والهوى

    يزلزل روحي عاصفاً كل زلزال

    I recalled Alexandria day and passion

    Shaking my soul tempestuously like a quake

  18. تذكرت هل أنسى وهاتيك ليلةٌ

    ستبقى بماضيها المخضّب في بالي

    Do I forget? And that is a night

    That remains in my bloody past in my thoughts

  19. وقفنا وللأمواج في البحر صرخة

    تصورتها في الليل زأرى رئبال

    We stood as the waves shrieked in the sea

    I fancied it at night my howling of a wolf

  20. وقفنا فناجينا الوجود بثائرٍ

    من الوجد مشبوب العواطف قتّال

    We stood confessing to existence indignantly

    With fervent passion, a lethal confession

  21. نسيتم نسيتم كيف إني لذاكر

    مواقف لا تنسى وإن بعد العهد

    You forgot, you forgot how I remember

    Stances that are unforgettable though time passed

  22. إذا ما ازدهى العشاق يوماً بحبهم

    فليس لنا في الحب قبلٌ ولا بعد

    When lovers are ardent one day in their love

    We have no before or after in passion

  23. هوانا الهوى والعاشقون جميعهم

    وإن عظموا في ظل رايتنا جند

    Our passion is one and all lovers

    Are great in the shade of our banner and army

  24. هجرتم فؤادي عامدين وإنه

    لصابٌ لذيذ الطعم يعنو له الشهد

    You deserted my heart intentionally though it

    Is delicious, craved by bees for its honey

  25. صددتم هنيئاً ما أردتم لروحكم

    فما أنا في ذاك الصدود بعاتب

    You blocked it competently however you wanted

    I do not blame you for this blocking

  26. أناجى هواكم كل حين بلهفة

    وما أنا عن ذاك الجناب بغائب

    I confide your love every moment fervently

    And I am not absent from that flank

  27. يصوّركم للقلب والروح باسمٌ

    من الروض زانته أيادي الخواضب

    A name adorned by the gardeners' hands

    Portrays you to the heart and the soul

  28. إذا ما التقى روح بروح فإننا

    على بعدنا في نشوةٍ بالتجاوب

    When a soul meets a soul, we are

    In bliss corresponding despite our distance

  29. تنادمني حلوانُ كل عيشة

    وكل جميل في المدائن حلوانُ

    The beauties of Galhouneh address me

    And all the beauty in the cities is Galhouneh

  30. إليها سرى نور بقلبي منارهُ

    فثارت بقلبي حين أصحر نيران

    To it the light of my heart's lamp roamed

    So it flared up when I became sleepless

  31. غرائب من وجد وأحلام صبوة

    يصورها بالشعر والنثر شيطان

    Wonders of passion and dreams of a young lover

    That the devil depicts in prose and verse

  32. أسكان حلوانٍ سلام ولوعة

    فأنتم بوجدان المتيم سكان

    Galhouneh's dwellers, peace and anguish

    For you are the companions of an ardent lover's being

  33. وقفت بباب اللوق تسعين مرة

    أسائل عنكم كل غاد ورائح

    I stood at the gate of Luq ninety times

    Asking about you each outgoing and incoming

  34. إذا صرخ الوابور قلت لعلني

    أفوز بمنضور من الطير سانح

    When the steamer squealed, I said maybe

    I will attain some news from a courier

  35. أيعرف باب اللوق أني أحبه

    وإن كان بالتهيام والوجد فاضحى

    Does the gate of Luq know I love it

    Though I have exposed myself with love and fervor?

  36. أطوف به في كل يوم وأنثنى

    بقلب عصوف الخفق بين الجوانح

    I roam around it daily and bend down

    With a fluttering heart amid the wings

  37. سلامٌ على أرض المعادي وأهلها

    سلامُ محبّ يستبد به الشوق

    Greetings to the land of Mo'adhi and its people

    Greetings of a lover consumed with longing

  38. حدائق خضرٌ لو أردت عصرتها

    وصيرتها شعراً له الفوز والسبق

    Green gardens, if I wished I would press them

    And turn them into poetry of triumph and precedence

  39. سلام على الحمام والجو صائفٌ

    وليس له غربٌ هناك ولا شرق

    Greetings to the doves and the weather is summery

    With no west or east over there

  40. أماليدُ يلقون المياه سوابحاً

    وعن كل صدر ساحر الحسن ينشق

    Young men diving into the water as swimmers

    As charm splits open from every enchanting chest

  41. معادي الخبيري ما الخبيري وما اسمه

    وما حاله والريح تعصف بالفلك

    What is Mo'adhi Al-Khbayri and what is his name?

    What is his state as the wind storms the firmament?

  42. أراد الذي ما لا نريد فأصبحت

    معاديه ساحاً للمآثم والفتك

    He wanted what we do not; so his abodes

    Became places of woes and wickedness

  43. يجاذبني شوقي إليها وإنني

    لأضمر شوقا للنفوح من المسك

    My craving pulls me toward it though I

    Conceal a longing for the gentle breeze from musk

  44. أكاد إذا استخبرت آثار وحيه

    اصاول قلبي بالملامة أو أبكى

    When I examine traces of his inspiration

    I almost blame my heart or weep

  45. حدائق لم يحجج إليهن شاعرٌ

    سوى البلبل الصداح يفتنه الزهر

    Gardens no poet visited

    Save the tuneful nightingale infatuated with flowers

  46. مضيتُ إليها والأصيل كأنه

    بأضوائه الصهباء من رقةٍ خمرُ

    I went to them and the night as if

    Intoxicated by its radiant delicacy of wine

  47. على بابها رضوان يرقب عودتي

    وينظر ما أهدى له وهو الشعر

    At its door Ridwan watches my return

    And sees what I bring him, which is poetry

  48. تعاليت يا شعري تعالت لواعجٌ

    إذا زفرت فالمستهام بها السحر

    Arise, my poetry, be sublime, stirring passions

    When it wails, infatuated by its magic

  49. أعاودُ أيام المعادي لعلني

    أخفّف ما بي من عناء ومن كرب

    I revisit Mo'adhi's days, perhaps

    I alleviate my troubles and anguish

  50. يعاودها قلبٌ إلى الحسن ظامىءٌ

    تعذبه الآهاتُ والنار في جنبي

    A thirsty heart for beauty returns to it

    Tormented by sighs and fire in my flank

  51. إذا استعرت مصر الجديدة ساعة

    تذكرتُ ما يلقاه من فادح الخطب

    Whenever Cairo burns an hour

    I recall the grave perils it faces

  52. أعاني من القيظ الأليم جواحماً

    قبسنَ جحيم الصيف والوجد من قلبي

    I suffer from the painful heat like hell

    Whose sparks from my passion and fervor ignite
