    وشوق إلى أهل الملاحة بالثغر

    Peace upon the roaring sea and its waves

    And longing for the sailors at the shore

  2. سلام عليه من مشوق متيم

    يعاني من الأشواق لاذعة الجمر

    Peace upon it from a passionate lover

    Who suffers from burning passions

  3. سلام على الرمل البهى وآهة

    إلى روحه والحسن في الصبح والعصر

    Peace upon the radiant sand and its sigh

    To its soul, beauty in the morn and eve

  4. ملاعب بعد اللَه غيا عبدتها

    ففتنة شط الرمل في سحرها عذرى

    Pastimes after God I worshipped

    So the magic of the sandy shore seduced my chastity

  5. سلام على البحر الرهيب بعصفه

    إذا جدجد الريح في ساعة الفجر

    Peace upon the awe-inspiring sea in its gusts

    When the wind rages at dawn

  6. ملكناه بالإسلام فازدان جيده

    وأصبح بحرا قد أضيف إلى مصر

    We conquered it with Islam, so its neck was adorned

    And it became a sea annexed to Egypt

  7. ديانة مبعوث إلى خير أمة

    مؤهلة للعلم والمجد والنصر

    The religion of a messenger sent to the best nation

    Qualified for knowledge, glory, and triumph

  8. فيا شارع الكورنيش ألف تحية

    إلى ما أثمنا في جوانبك الغر

    So hello to you, Corniche road, a thousand greetings

    To what we cherished in your banks

  9. لنا سمكات فيه يسبحن جهرة

    إذا اشتد وقد القيظ في ساعة الظهر

    For us are fish that swim loudly

    When the heat of noon intensifies

  10. خلعت ثيابي واستبقت أصيدها

    كما كنت أصطاد الظباء على البر

    I took off my clothes and raced to catch them

    As I used to hunt gazelles on land

  11. خذوا حظكم من عيشكم ما استطعتمو

    فذلك فن عبقرى من الشكر

    Take your share of livelihood as much as you can

    For that is the genius of gratitude

  12. وإن قيل إن العشق شر فربما

    يكون ببعض الشر نور من الخير

    And if they say that passion is evil, maybe

    With some evil there is light of good

  13. وردتك يا بحر الفتون لتفتنتى

    فما رأيك الوضاح يا بحر في أمرى

    Your rose, O sea of seductions, seduced me

    So what is your clear opinion, O sea, about my matter?

  14. سلوا شارع الكورنيش هل هو ذاكر

    مآثم ما أبدعت بالصبوة البكر

    Ask the Corniche road, does it remember

    My sins when I was chaste and virgin?

  15. لقد كنت ألقاه وللشمس ميلة

    إلى البحر تهوى في جوانبه الخضر

    I used to meet it while the sun inclined

    Towards the sea, craving its green coasts

  16. فأهصر ما ألقى من الغيد عارما

    وللغصن شوق مستطير إلى الهصر

    So I wildly cast what I held of ornaments

    And the branch craved to fly towards the bouquet

  17. كتائب من أهل الجمال عيونها

    عيون المها بين الرصافة والجسر

    Groups of the beautiful, their eyes

    Eyes of does between Rusafa and the bridge

  18. وألوان أقوام تباين خلقها

    تباين ما في الروض من أضرب الزهر

    And skins of people varying in creations

    Varying what is in the garden of flower kinds

  19. تجور علينا بالجمال وتنثنى

    فنوسعها لثما على ذلل الجور

    They tempt us with beauty and sway

    So we make room for their kiss of subjugation

  20. إذا أنت لم تعط الجمال حقوقه

    فأنت امرؤ قد صيغ من جلمد الصخر

    If you do not give beauty its rights

    You are a man molded from stubborn rock

  21. حلفت بهذا البحر جل ثناؤه

    وإني لبر حين أحلف بالبحر

    I swore by this magnificent sea

    And I am dutiful when swearing by the sea

  22. لأعتصرن الخمر من كل وجنة

    وأتركها تهفو إلى ذلك العصر

    I will squeeze wine from every cheek

    And leave it frothing for that press

  23. تنشقت منك اليود يقدح نفحه

    بأطيب من نفح يطير عن الخمر

    Traces of passion diffusing from you smote me

    With a scent purer than the scent of wine

  24. وأبصرت فيزوف الأشم وناره

    فسبحان من يرمى إلى الماء بالجمر

    And I saw Etna's fires and flames

    Glory to Him who casts fire into water

  25. صقلية في البحر أيضا رأيتها

    فأقبل ماء العين من حزنه يجرى

    Sicily too I saw in the sea

    So the water of my eyes flowed in sorrow

  26. ذكرت ابن حمديس ورائع شعره

    وأيامه بين الكآبة والبشر

    I recalled Ibn Hamdis and the wonders of his poetry

    And his days between gloom and cheer

  27. أتى شعراء ينشدون قصيدهم

    لقد كذبوا فالشعر في روحه شعرى

    Poets came reciting their poems

    They lied, for poetry is in my soul poetry

  28. وبالنثر صيرت الترسل روضة

    معطرة الأنفاس بالزهر في النثر

    And in prose I made my writings a garden

    Scattering its breaths with flowers in prose

  29. ويشتمنى قوم كوتهم ضغائن

    على الرغم ما قالوا فإني فتى العصر

    And people attack me, their hatreds

    Despite what they said, I am the youth of the age

  30. متى يرتضى دهرى فأرجع ثانيا

    إلى جمرات الحب في ثبج البحر

    When will my time be content, so I return again

    To the embers of love in the sea's kindling?

  31. جلست على الشط الفريد بهاؤه

    وفيه وجوه هن أبهى من البدر

    I sat on the unique shore in its splendor

    On it faces more radiant than the moon

  32. ظباء وظبيات وبيض نواعم

    وحمر وسمر آه من فتنة السمر

    Gazelles, does, soft bright skins

    Reds and tawny browns - ah the seduction of the tawny!

  33. إذا نفرت حسناء منك فخلها

    سترجع يوما وهي من صبوة تجرى

    If a beauty walks away from you, let her go

    One day she will return, a fawn running

  34. وهذا الغزال الحلو ما أمر نوره

    وفي خده أشياء من فتنة النور

    As for this sweet gazelle, what of its light?

    On its cheek things of the seduction of light

  35. تلاحظني عيناه في كل لحظة

    فأرمقه نشوان بالنظر الشذر

    Its eyes watch me every moment

    So I wink at it playfully with flirty glances

  36. ويعجب من صبرى ولم يدر أنني

    فقدت جميل الصبر في ساحة الصبر

    And it wonders at my patience, not knowing

    I lost the beauty of patience in the field of patience

  37. وفي صدره عتب عليّ وإنني

    لأجهل عمداً عامداً فتنة الصدر

    In its chest there is blame on me, though I

    Deliberately, intentionally ignore the seduction of the chest

  38. وفي نحره عتب وخمسون آهة

    فيا ويلتي من فاتن الروح بالنحر

    In its throat there are fifty sighs and blames

    Oh what anguish from the soul's seduction at the throat!

  39. تعال إلى عندي تعال ولا تخف

    ولجلج كما تهوى بلاحظك السحري

    Come to me, come, do not fear

    And sway as you wish with your magical glances

  40. إذا أنت لم تفهم حديثي فإنني

    سألهمك المكنون ف القلب من شعري

    If you do not understand my words, I will

    Whisper to you the secret in my heart of my poetry

  41. أرى الشام في خديك والشام جنة

    لكل مليح خده من جدا الخمر

    I see Syria in your cheek, and Syria is a paradise

    For each beautiful cheek is dyed from wine

  42. أرى الروم في عطفيك يرنو لفتنتي

    فيا بحر هذا الروم أمرك من أمري

    I see Rome in your shoulder inclining to seduce me

    So O sea, this Rome is your matter and mine

  43. تطول صباباتي إليك وأنثنى

    أحاول ما أسقيت روحي من السحر

    My passionate cravings lengthen toward you and I sway

    Trying what I have watered my soul with magic

  44. سيعرف هذا الظبي ماذا أريده

    فما كان حبي لحظة بالهوى العذرى

    This gazelle will know what I want

    For my love was not for an instant innocent flirtation
