1. Hark, my people: concealment has fallen away,

    and patience and consolation have deserted me.

  2. My companion marvels that one like me should go to waste,

    for the affliction of a man deprived of favor has no cure.

  3. My lord has shunned me, though once he treated me kindly;

    I have committed no offense—why, then, this estrangement?

  4. I took up residence at his court, knowing that I

    was in a court where hope is never disappointed.

  5. But when my head grew gray beneath his protection,

    I was barred because of what followed the audience.

  6. Though the curtains of admittance recede from us,

    love and praise have not receded.

  7. And though my enemy has plotted unjustly against me,

    when the matter is examined, the veil will fall away.

  8. Have you not seen that, throughout the lands, from among us

    lie skulls whose graves are filled with loyalty?

  9. Ziyad has described Time to us,

    and spoken a saying in which there is healing:

  10. Ah, many a prize will be won

    when fortune turns to us, while many a glad man will be grieved.

  11. O champion of the caliphs, you have poured bounty upon us

    as the sky pours bounty upon the earth.

  12. Your twofold justice embraced the people, and they stood upright

    through judgments radiant with light.

  13. So long as you live, no good shall pass us by;

    it is enough for us that your life endure.
