1. قالوا تمنّ فقلت القوتَ في دعةٍ

    ببطن مرّة لا وحلٌ ولا سهكُ

    They asked what I wish for, I said: basic sustenance in a life of ease

    With a belly that’s sometimes full, sometimes not, no riches or fancy clothes

  2. بطنٌ إذا افترشَ المسكينُ تربتَهُ

    رأيتَ أنظفَ فرشٍ يفرشُ الملكُ

    A belly that when the poor man lies on the ground, you’d think

    It's the finest bedding that a king lays down

  3. لي حرّةٌ من عباد اللَه صالحةٌ

    لا الجارَ تؤذى ولا الإسلامَ تنتهكُ

    I have a free woman, pious and virtuous

    Who does no harm to neighbors or the faith she holds

  4. والصقر والكلب إما كنت ذا جلدٍ

    وإن ضعفتُ فريشي الدبق والشبكُ

    Be I a falcon or hound, if I have strength and stamina

    And if I'm frail, my feathers and fur are enough for me

  5. وطائرات على برجٍ مطوّقة

    كأنّما ريشُها السمورُ والفنكُ

    Birds circling a tower, their wings like fox and lynx fur

    Should guests arrive suddenly, I have for them

  6. وإن يفاجئكَ أضيافٌ أتاكَ لهم

    مقلوُّ بسرٍ به البرنيُّ ينعلكُ

    A pot with broth, seasoned well, that the pores soak up

    In a house built not by ill-gotten gains

  7. في منزلٍ لم يكن من مكسبٍ سحتٍ

    ولا يخاف به من عاملٍ درَكُ

    Where no ruler need be feared

    I leave piety to the pious, and those who plot treachery can keep it

  8. تُسلم النسك للنساك خلوتُه

    ويستر الفتك من قوم إذا فتكوا

    Oh home, time did not assist me in attaining you

    I did not manage to live in you, traversing the sky

  9. يا منزلاً لم يساعدني الزمان به

    لم يدر لي بأن أحيا به الفلك

    I wished for a life unknown to others

    Except one wise in the sweetness of simple living

  10. لقد تمنّيت عيشاً ليس يعرفهُ

    إلّا بصيرٌ بطيبِ العيش محتنكُ
