Come, give me your cup to drink, and leave aside whoever refuses;
give drink to bones whose utmost end is decay.
For, beyond all doubt, my drinking companion is honored
in my presence, and has from me whatever his heart desires.
Nor do I say to him, over what remains in the cup,
“Drink it down!”—to lay him low, drunk—once he has refused.
Rather, I would ransom him and honor his face and dignity;
I drink what he gives me, and give him to drink whatever he desires.
Nor, when he sleeps in my house, is he ever awakened,
nor, while awake, does he hear anything hurtful.
