Slow down, O you who have given us the news of the full moon

Bearing news of death in your jug or embers?

Rather the embers of fire that burned the bushes

And increased the blazing sorrows in my burning liver

    Oh sorrowful heart, until when

Will you endure the calamities of fate unraveling

    Sorrows accumulated from every side

Upon you so no day passes without memories

If only Allah had sheltered you from an impenetrable rock

The events pass over you without being narrated

The hand of separation has snatched a planet away from me

With it sorrows have matched my night and dawn

The destiny stretched out a blossoming branch to break

    Deliberately snapping its youth

Then faded, so faded my branch of endurance after him

And my life after being separated became bitter

A beloved who has torn my heart by his loss

My heart split in two after his death

The hand of fate gave him a cup of sorrow to drink

So I fell drunk with grief after him

So, O fire of my grief do not weep over his loss

And O my heart, do not accept patience for his separation

And O my eyes, if your tears dry up, then make

The blood of the heart into tears pouring over his grave

And O my eyes, your moon has set today so watch over

His separation beneath the darkness with twinkling stars

And O my soul, we did not expect

To count the day and month of this separation from fate

Indeed, his heart was part of my being

Just as my gratitude was part of my eyes

He was my companion in my life, how I wished

I could have stayed in his company forever

I would that we both sleep with no fear of separation

In one grave - and how good it would be to share his grave

I have not fulfilled the right of love unless I die of longing

For him so my life, I reckon, has become deceit

O seat of knowledge the like of which is rarely found

And O poet peerless in poetry after him

And composer of subtle meanings and collector

Of scattered beauties in his masterful compositions

And O you who collected in every art its essence

And gained what we cannot limit or quantify

And you who were hosts at gatherings heartening them

Then left them feeling lonely when you brought joy even to barren spots

And you who were a haven and store

For the weary, and a treasure for those seeking your knowledge

I will cry over you as the pigeons moan and as long as

The rain of sadness pours drops upon your tomb

Greetings unto the face of the beloved, though his fire

Has exhausted my heart and breast

Upon his radiant, handsome face that is to my heart a picture never to leave it

    As long as I live

For him is forgiveness and pleasure from the Most Merciful

And for me are the tears of al-Khansa' when she lost Sakhr
