أَهلاً بذات قلائدٍ وشنوفِ

حيَّت فأحيت مهجة المشغوفِ

Greetings, O bearer of necklaces and anklets

You have revived a passionate heart by your greeting

منَّ الكريم بها عليَّ رسالةً

تًفدَى بكل وصيفةٍ ووصيفِ

The generous one has honored me with a message

That can be ransomed for any female confidant

ذاك الأديب الكاملَ العَلَم الذي

أَوصافهُ دلَّت على الموصوفِ

That complete scholar, the flag of knowledge

Whose traits point to the described

وكفى بهِ عُمَريَّ مجدٍ تالدٍ

من مجد يلتقي بطَريفِ

And his enduring magnificent glory suffices me

A glory that meets the edge of a sword

الناظم الدُرَر اليتامَى خُرَّداً

تبدو من القرطاس تحت سجوفِ

The composer strings together precious pearls

That appear from under the paper's cover

يا روضةَ العلم التي من دَوحها

تجني القرائحُ دانياتِ قطوفِ

O garden of knowledge from which

Intellects pick the lowest hanging fruits

أَهديتني مدحاً بهِ أَغرقتني

في بحر فضلٍ لم يكن بخفيفِ

You have gifted me with praise that has drowned me

In an ocean of virtue that was not meager

عَظُمَت عليَّ بحسن جودكَ منَّةٌ

ثَقُلَت على عزمٍ لديَّ نحيفِ

The favor of your generosity has burdened me

With a task too heavy for my feeble resolve

ومقابلُ الفضلآءِ يَأمَنُ ضعفُهُ

بإزآءِ حلمهمِ من التعنيفِ

And the recompense of noble men is secured

From their forbearance of criticism

وتمام فضل البارعين أُولي النُهَى

اغضآءُ طرفٍ عن قصور ضعيفِ

And the hallmark of skilled men of wisdom

Is overlooking the faults of the weak
