1. A caliphate from which its caliphs have passed away—

    of the House of Osman, those who reigned and those who built it high.

  2. They left glory within it to the generations after them,

    and glory is preserved for later generations by illustrious men.

  3. Until it passed to a prince, in his despotic sway,

    whose hallmarks even ʿĀd and Shaddād would fear.

  4. Woe to us! We mourn only a homeland of our own,

    for which, beneath the earth, fathers and forefathers weep.
