1. أهوِنْ بما يُبكي عيون الباكي

    إن كان ما يبكيه غير نواكِ

    I care not for what makes the eyes of the weepers cry

    If what makes them weep is other than longing for you

  2. يا مصر لا أنساك ما طال المدى

    وإخال ما في الناس من ينساكِ

    O Egypt, I shall never forget you though time be long

    And the people forget what goodness dwells in you

  3. لله اثنا عشر عاماً قد مضت

    ألحق وازرني بها وهواك

    Twelve years have passed by the will of God

    I've endured them, my love for you still strong

  4. اشتاق أخواني بينك وإنما

    يشتاق من صافاك من صافاك

    I long for my brothers there, though truly

    It's longing for your purity that makes me long

  5. قد كان لي ذكر بأرضك سالف

    لا النيل بجهلهُ ولا هرماك

    I had fond memories of your land

    Not of the Nile's ignorance, or your pyramids

  6. أيام انطقني واسمعك الصبا

    وغدوتُ طيرك إذ غدوت أراكي

    My youthful days let me speak, and hear you

    I became your bird when I came to see you

  7. وإذا الإله قضى بوصلك بعدذا

    فلا مسحن وجهي ببعض ثراك

    And if God decrees we shall meet again after this

    Do not wipe my face with any of your soil

  8. علم الزمان قلاه ليس يذلني

    فسعى يحاول ذلتي بقلاك

    Time taught me patience, it cannot humiliate me

    Though it has tried to humble me through your absence

  9. ولئن حييت على نواك فإنما

    أحيا لآمالي بأن ألقاك

    And if I live on despite your distance

    I live only for the hope of seeing you again

  10. وأرى كبيرات الخطوب صغيرة

    وأرى هلاكي لا أخاف هلاكي

    I see great calamities as small

    And see my demise - yet I do not fear my demise

  11. وتخاذل الأنصال عني زادني

    عزماً فجد مع الزمان عراكي

    The slackening of my peers only strengthened

    My resolve - so struggle on, my time of strife

  12. زادت تباريحي فزدت تطرباً

    وشكا سواي فعبت وجد الشاكي

    My wounds increased, and so did my fervor

    Another complained to me, so I raved, the suffering complainant

  13. لو أن من شدوا قيودي حاولوا

    يوماً فكاكي ما رضيت فكاكي

    If those who bound me had one day tried

    To free me, I'd not have wanted freedom from them

  14. قد سرّك الدهر العجيب وساءني

    فضحكت أنت وبت وحدي الباكي

    Time has amazed you and pained me

    You laughed while I, alone, cried

  15. الهاك بعدي بالجديد من المنى

    يا ليت ألهاني كما ألهاك

    After me, become preoccupied with novel wishes

    Oh, would that I could make you long as you made me long

  16. وتفنن الشعراء فيك فأبدعوا

    لو كنتُ حاضر أمرهم لكفاك

    The poets have innovated about you beautifully

    Had I been present I'd have stopped their excess

  17. يأتيك مني ما تجدد خاطر

    شعر يكاد به يرف هواك

    There comes to you from me something that renews your thoughts

    Poetry that could almost make your love tremble

  18. أجنيه من روض الشبيبة ناضراً

    هذا جناي وأنت كيف جناك

    I plucked it from the garden of my vibrant youth

    This is my crime, so how did it wound you?

  19. إن كان هذا الصوت بحّ بكبرة

    فلطالما بشبابه غنّاك

    If this voice sang with vitality

    Then for long it sang your praises in its youth

  20. أو كان قد أمسى اليراع مثلما

    فسينبري وسكونه لحراك

    Or it has now become quiet, just as

    The slumbering grove stirs and hushes

  21. يا عرش نسل الشمس في عليائهم

    سامي الكواكب في السماء وحاكي

    O throne of the sun's progeny in their loftiness

    Planets orbiting high, interwoven

  22. هل في البرية مثل نيلك منهل

    أم في البرية من ربى كرباك

    Is there in the wild a spring like your Nile

    Or one in the wild who nurtured like you nurtured?

  23. أنت التي آخاك منذ مناوس

    قلب الشجاع وحجة السفاك

    You who, since your temple caretakers,

    Have sheltered the hearts of the brave and the avenger's argument

  24. وورثت نجدتها التي ثأرت بها

    إيزس أمك أوزريس أباك

    And inherited your mother Isis' vindication

    When she avenged your father Osiris

  25. الناس قد كلفوا بحبك كلهم

    وتنازعوك ومن حواك حواك

    People are all called to love you

    They disputed you, and disputed your lovers

  26. أمسى صعيدك جنة لملوكهم

    وغدت سماؤك جنة الأملاك

    Your countryside has become a paradise for its kings

    Your sky has become a paradise for angels

  27. تالله أعجزهم نظيرك في الثرى

    فليطلبوه هناك في الأفلاك

    By God, I cannot match you in the land

    Let them seek this in the cosmos
