If you two cannot, on the day he sought it,
lend me your aid, then leave off your blame.
You both reproached me because I passed by
a dwelling, to discharge the bond I owe it.
It is the beloveds’ dwelling; decay has
left nothing but its crumbling remains.
I owe it this right: the clouds of my eyelids must shake—
hands with its dust.
By your father, I shall surely quench
its thirst, even by pouring out my own blood before it.
Tears are not for the ruins; rather,
their people are the ones who set them streaming.
How long, then, will you two reproach me? Is there,
in keeping covenants, any fault upon me?
Ah, for a heart that never recovers
through solace that might heal its lovesick passion—
a target for separation, whose arrows never cease
to strike true within it.
Forever, the hand of days tears open
its wounds whenever they knit closed.
