يا دهرُ كم هَذا التَّفَرْ
رُقُ والتَّغَرُّبُ والشَّتاتُ
O Time, how long this separation—
bondage, exile, and scattering?
أبداً على سيرٍ كأنْ
نِي الشّمسُ لَيس لها ثَباتُ
Forever journeying onward, as though
I were the sun, never staying still.
متقلقلُ العَزَماتِ كال
مطلوبِ أفرقَهُ البَياتُ
Wavering in my resolves, like a
hunted man whom a night raid has terrified.
ناءٍ عن الأهلينَ وال
أَوطانِ والأترابُ ماتُوا
Far from family and home—
lands; and my peers have died.
ولَبِئْسَ عيشُ المرءِ فا
رقَهُ الأحِبّةُ واللِّدَاتُ
Wretched indeed is the life of one whose
loved ones and pleasures have left him.
فإِلامَ أَشقى بالبَقا
ءِ وكَمْ تُعذّبُني الحياةُ
How long, then, must I suffer by remaining
alive? And how life torments me!
