1. كفَى حزَناً أنّي مقيمٌ ببلدةٍ

    يُعلّلُني بعدَ الأحبّةِ دَاهِرُ

    Enough sorrow that I dwell in a land

    Where, after loved ones, a vagrant consoles me,

  2. يحدّثُني ممّا يُجمّعُ عقلُه

    أحاديثَ منها مستقيمٌ وجَائِرُ

    Telling me of whatever his mind can gather,

    Words, some straightforward, others twisted,

  3. لقد ولّى زمانٌ نحنُ فيه

    فُسقياً للحِمَام به ورُعيَا

    The days have certainly gone by when

    We were devoted to caring for the doves,

  4. إسارٌ بين أتراكٍ ورُومٍ

    وفقدُ أحبّةٍ ورِفاقُ شَعَيا

    Now we are captives amid Turks and Byzantines,

    Having lost loved ones and boon companions.
