Would that I knew: shall I call out to a caravan,
as they lie asleep there in the wilderness,
“Long have you halted for the night—mount up, and carry me with you;
the Pleiades are due to rise.”
My anguish has indeed driven sleep from me,
and my soul’s inward talk has long been consumed with longing.
ʿAtīq said something to me about her,
and at his words the tears began to flow.
He told me, “Bid Sulaymā farewell and let her go.”
But the heart answered him, “I cannot.”
May God never cure me of her; rather,
may the heart’s fractures over her increase.
Do not blame me for my yearning for her;
weep for me over what the ribs conceal.
