1. My grief returned to haunt me after a spell of solace;

    a beloved’s phantom passed by at night and kept me awake—

  2. the phantom of a gazelle dwelling in al-ʿAqīq,

    whose love has wasted and tormented me.

  3. And when joined with me, she is sweet of—

    spirit; my Lord has indeed made me enamored of her.

  4. The beloved’s dwellings have receded far and grown remote;

    how far the beloved’s people are from my homeland!

  5. I became bound to her—to my sorrow—and a king

    bore her away from me; thus she became my anguish.

  6. If only she would follow me through life,

    and at my death my shroud might enfold her.

  7. O glance—never did I cast one more agonizing:

    I never saw her after it, nor did she see me.
