أَجمَعَت خُلَّتي مَعَ الهَجرِ بَينا

جَلَّلَ اللَهُ ذَلِكَ الوَجهَ زَينا

My friend brought absence with her,

God adorned that face beautifully.

أَجمَعَت بَينَها وَلَم نَكُ مِنها

لَذَّةَ العَيشِ وَالشَبابِ قَضَينا

She brought it while we have not enjoyed

The pleasures of life and the prime of youth.

فَتَوَلَّت حُمولُها وَاِستَقَلَّت

لَم تُنِل طائِلاً وَلَم نَقضِ دَينا

So her burdens departed and lightened,

She brought no harm and we broke no debt.

فَأَصابَت بِهِ فُؤادي فَهاجَت

حَزَناً لي مُبَرِّحاً كانَ حَينا

Thus it landed upon my heart raging,

Grief for me though once it was joy.

وَلَقَد قُلتُ يَومَ مَكَّةَ لَمّا

أَرسَلَت تَقرَأُ السَلامَ عَلينا

And I said one day in Mecca, when

She sent greeting peace be upon us.

أَنعَمَ اللَهُ بِالرَسولِ الَّذي أَر

سَلَ وَالمُرسِلِ الرِسالَةَ عَينا

May God favor the messenger whom He sent

And the sender of the message itself.
