قَد زادَ قَلبي حَزَناً
رَسمٌ وَرَبعٌ مُحوِلُ
My heart has grown sadder,
A quarter and plot transformed,
رَبعٌ لِهِندٍ مُقفِرٌ
قَد كانَ حيناً يُؤهَلُ
A barren quarter of India,
Once a place of comfort.
ما إِن بِهِ مِن أَهلِهِ
إِلّا الظِباءُ الخُذَّلُ
None of its people remain
Except frightened jackals.
قَد كُنتُ فيهِم ناعِماً
أَلهو بِهِم وَأَجذَلُ
I was at ease among them,
Playing, having fun.
أَيامَ هِندٍ وَالهَوى
مِنّا لِهِندٍ تَبذُلُ
Days of India and passion
We devoted ourselves to India.
فَحالَ دَهرٌ دونَها
دَهرٌ لَعَمري مُعضِلُ
But time came between us,
Time, oh my life, so harsh!
بِتنا وَقَلبي مُشفِقٌ
مِن صَرمِ هِندٍ أَوجَلُ
We remain, and my heart is anxious
For the danger in India’s weapons.
إِذ أَرسَلَت في خُفيَةٍ
إِنَّ المُحِبَّ المُرسِلُ
When in secret she sent
“Indeed the lover sending.”
تَقولُ هِندٌ اِئتِنا
فَقُلتُ لا لا أَفعَلُ
India said “Come to us”
But I said “No, no, I will not!”
وَاللَهُ لا آتيكُمُ
حَتّى يَزورُ الأَوَّلُ
By God, I will not come to you
Until the first returns
عَن حُبِّكُم يا هِندُ ما
عُمِّرتُ حَيّاً أَغفُلُ
From love of you, O India, never
While I live will I forget!
