1. مَنَعَ النَومَ ذِكرُهُ

    مِن حَبيبٍ مُجانِبِ

    Remembering him deprived sleep

    Of a lover turned away

  2. بَعدَ ما قيلَ قَد صَحا

    عَن طِلابِ الحَبائِبِ

    After it was said he recovered

    From seeking out loved ones

  3. وَبَدا يَومَ أَعرَضَت

    صَفحُ خَدٍّ وَحاجِبِ

    And the day he turned his cheek

    And eyebrow away

  4. صادَتِ القَلبَ إِذ رَمَت

    ذاتَ يَومِ المَناصِبِ

    It pained my heart when

    One day he assumed high rank

  5. يَومَ قالَت لِنِسوَةٍ

    مِن لُؤَيِّ بنِ غالِبِ

    The day she said to women

    Of Lu'ayy, son of Ghalib

  6. وَآنِساتٍ عَقإِلٍ

    كَالظِباءِ الرَبائِبِ

    And intelligent companions

    Like playful gazelles

  7. قُمنَ عَنهُ يَقُل بِحا

    جَتِهِ أَو يُعاتِبِ

    “Rise from him, he may complain

    Of his love or reproach”

  8. فَتَوَلّى نَواعِمٌ

    مُثقَلاتُ الحَقائِبِ

    So the delicate ones turned aside

    Their burdens heavy

  9. فَتَأَطَّرنَ ساعَةً

    في مُناخِ الرَكائِبِ

    Lingering awhile

    In the resting places of the mounts

  10. مِن عِشاءٍ حَتّى إِذا

    غابَ تالي الكَواكِبِ

    From evening until the stars

    Behind the hills disappeared

  11. قامَ يَلحى وَيَستَحِث

    ثُ عَلى المَكثِ صاحِبي

    He got up, wandered and urged

    His companions to hurry on

  12. قالَ أَصبَحتَ فَاِنقَلِب

    مُنجِداً غَيرَ خائِبِ

    Saying “Dawn has come so let’s go back

    Helped, and not denied”

  13. وَاِنقَضى اللَيلُ كُلُّهُ

    تِلكَ إِحدى المَصائِبِ

    And the night ended completely

    Such is one of the calamities
