طَمِعتُ بِأَمرٍ لَيسَ لي فيهِ مَطمَعُ

فَأَخلَفَني فَالعَينُ مِن ذاكَ تَدمَعُ

I hoped for something not meant for me,

So it failed me and since then my eyes weep.

وَباعَدَني مَن لا أُحِبُّ بِعادَهُ

فَنَفسي عَلَيهِ كُلَّ حينٍ تَقَطَّعُ

He who I do not love has avoided me,

So my soul against him is torn asunder.

وَقَد كُنتُ أَرجو أَن تَجودَ بِنائِلٍ

فَأَلفَيتُها بِالبَذلِ لا تَتَطَوَّعُ

I hoped it would give generously,

But found it was not inclined to give.

فَواكَبِدي مِن خَشيَةِ البَينِ بَعدَما

رَجوتُ نَوالاً مِن عُثَيمَةَ يَنفَعُ

So bear with me the agony of separation, after

I hoped to gain good things from Uthaymah.

فَقَد تَرَكَتني ما أَلَذُّ لِذُلَّةٍ

حَديثاً وَنَفسي نَحوَها تَتَطَلَّعُ

It has left me, though it was so sweet to my disgrace,

Newly, while my soul still longs for it.
