يا صاحَ لا تَلحَني وَقُل سَدَدا

إِنّي أَرى الحُبَّ قاتِلي كَمَدا

O friend, do not blame me and say rightly,

I see love is killing me slowly.

جُملٌ أَحاديثُ ذا الفُؤادِ إِذا

هَبَّ وَأَحلامُهُ إِذا رَقَدا

The talks of this heart are nonsense when

It wanders and its dreams when asleep.

إِن شِئتَ حَدَّثتُكَ اليَقينَ لِكَي

تَعذِرَني أَو حَلَفتُ مُجتَهِدا

If you want, I will tell you the truth so

You can excuse me or I swear trying hard.

بِاللَهِ لَولا الرَجاءُ إِذ مَنَعَت

مَعروفَها اليَومَ أَن تَجودَ غَدا

By God, if not for hope when she denied

Her kindness today, she may give tomorrow.

إِذا لَقَد فَتَّ حُبُّها كَبِدي

إِن كانَ حُبٌّ يُفَتِّتُ الكَبِدا

If her love has ruptured my liver,

If love can rupture a liver indeed.

ما ذاكَ مِن نائِلٍ يُنيلُ وَلا

أَسدَت فَتَجزي بِهِ إِلَيَّ يَدا

That is not from an obtainer obtaining, nor

Did she offer to reward me.

إِلّا سَفاهاً وَإِنَّني كَلِفٌ

أَحسَبُ غَيِّي مِن حُبِّها رَشَدا

Except foolishly, though I am burdened,

I think my madness for her love is right.

أَلا تَراني مُخامِراً سَقَماً

كَحَّلَ عَيني بِمَأقِها السَهَدا

Do you not see me sick with passion

That painted my eyes with her dark eyelids?

أَحبَبتُ حُبّاً مِثلَ الجُنونِ فَقَد

أَبلى عِظامي وَغَيَّرَ الجَسَدا

I loved a love like madness, so it has

Wasted my bones and changed the body.
