Until the watcher saw Sirius clearly revealed,
When he drew near, coming away from the dawn prayer,
In a redness that dawn’s whiteness had not overwhelmed,
Nor had night lifted from it; it was clearing away.
Night grew threadbare; in its darkness it had not caught up with
The day’s lead, even a little; so it draws nearer.
Night does not despair of it as it follows the day,
Nor does day concede it to night.
