  4. For if diversion invites the young,

  5. And what hope is there of youth, when

    gray hair stands in the way of its prime?

  6. By my life, its cavalry came out into open country

    along the banks of the Tigris, against Mus‘ab.

  7. We reached the Euphrates and its Khabur,

    and both were dependable watering places.

  8. On every rise you see a warrior bearing a battle-mark,

    gnashing his teeth like a mangy camel.

  9. In the sun's full glare, upon his head,

    a ray sparkles like a star.

  10. If ever a hypocrite among the people of Iraq

    was reproached one day and made no amends,

  11. we advanced upon him with a mighty force,

    scarcely looking for absent men,

  12. with an army that, whenever it entered a hollow,

    left it barren, even if it had pasture.

  13. And I did not say it out of fear: only

    the guilty suffer punishment.

  14. Nor as a petitioner; indeed, with God

    are the best things to ask for and seek.

  15. He causes death and gives life; so men have

    nowhere to turn in hope except to God.

  16. Whenever God sets a man's saddle

    on the back of a hardship, he rides.

  17. And no man attains anything he desires

    unless it has been written.
