يا اِبنَ الدَوامِيِّ الَّذي
صابَ نَداهُ وَهَطَل
O son of al-Dawāmī, whose
bounty poured down in torrents;
يا مَن إِذا داوى شَفا
وَمَن إِذا أَدوى قَتَل
O you who, when you treat, heal,
and when you afflict, kill;
مُختَلِفَ الطَعمَينِ في
يَوميهِ صابٌ وَعَسَل
your two flavors differ: in
your days, bitter sap and honey.
أَهدَيتَ لِلقَلبِ بِما
أَهدَيتَ أُنساً وَجَذَل
I gave it to the heart; my gift
was companionship and joy—
هَدِيَّةٌ مِثلُ العَذا
رى رُفِعَت عَنها الكِلَل
a gift like maidens
with their veils lifted away;
أَو كَخُدودِ الغانِيا
تِ دَمِيَت مِنَ الخَجَل
or like the cheeks of beautiful women,
blood-red with modesty;
كَأَنَّها رَقراقُ ما
ءٍ في نَواحيهِ شُعَل
as though it were shimmering water
with flames along its edges;
كَأَنَّهُ مِن عَرفِكَ ال
فائِحِ في الناسِ اِحتَمَل
as though some of your fragrance—
wafting among the people—were borne in it;
كَأَنَّهُ مِن لُطفِهِ
عَلى مَعانيكَ اِشتَمَل
as though, through its own delicacy,
it embraced your qualities;
كَأَنَّهُ كَفُّكَ لا
يَصلُحُ إِلّا لِلقُبَل
as though it were your hand, never
fit for anything but kisses.
