O you whose auspicious arrival
Dispelled the distress in my eyes
And restored the days of joy
When you returned, as you began them
My eyelids were thirsty for the radiance of your face
So let them drink their fill, quenched by its glow
Since you left, I’ve known no comfort
In sleep, nor heard music’s tones
And Baghdad grew desolate without you
When you went far from it
Its joy left, vegetation withered
And its brightness turned to gloom
Until its mornings were indistinguishable
From its evenings without you
You bid it farewell in emptiness
And it lost all its adornments
Its horizons grew dark when you were gone
But you returned and illuminated them
Like a splendid night when darkness
Prevails over its brightness
Today it dawned, scented with you
Its air is fragrant, its meadows verdant
Your blessings stretched over its groves
And settled in its gardens
The withered boughs grew green again
At your call, and the plains donned green
The dates were nearly destroyed
By your long absence
But the splendor of the faith revived them
And strengthened their resources
It held calamity back from its dwellers
And protected them with its might
It gave governance its due right
When caring for the flock
A fitting one, when critical affairs
Are entrusted to him, manages them
You made him wrathful when misfortune
Touched it, to fend it off
And he followed the exemplary path you set out
Never straying into error
With resolute determination like the stars
Never wavering from their course
Humbly yielding to you, his face
Ever turned to you in devotion
Never deviating from the righteous path
To your supremacy, nor transgressing it
O pinnacle of glory which the victorious
Strive to attain
O band of kingship which the Caliph
Chose and approved
Charging the breach of injustice
When war spins its cycle
The swords complain of shortness to them
So they make their blades longer
With Muhammad its foundations of glory were laid
And the height of its edifice constructed
A king who, when eras deteriorate,
Adorns them with his vitality
He spent his wealth’s treasuries
And acquired glory, making it his own
He tamed affairs, so they submitted
To his firm handling, bending to his will
No issue was too hard for him
Except that he found its solution
He spends the miles, riding, when
The steeds exhaust their distances
O you whose palm the clouds
Learned generosity from its openness
Pouring abundant rains on the needy
Watering life's pasture
In hearts you have a love
That remains constant, its bond unbroken
As though you were created from their conscience
And their deepest affections
And as if their loving you
Was the nature He imbued them with
