1. وَأَغيَدٍ مُكتَمِلٍ حُسنُهُ

    لَيسَ لَهُ في الناسِ مِن مُشبِهِ

    And a graceful youth, his beauty complete—

    among all people, none resembled him.

  2. أَسقَطَهُ العارِضُ مِن رُتبَةٍ

    مُخبَرَةٍ بِالقُربِ مِن رَبِّهِ

    The side-whisker cast him down from a rank

    that proclaimed his nearness to his Lord.

  3. فَقُلتُ إِذ سالَ لَهُ عارِضٌ

    فَأَعرَضَ العُشّاقُ عَن حُبِّهِ

    So I said, when a side-whisker trailed down his cheek

    and the lovers turned away from loving him:

  4. لَو فَكَّرَ العاشِقُ في مُنتَهى

    حُسنِ الَّذي يَسبيهِ لَم يَسبِهِ

    Had the lover reflected on the final end

    of the beauty of the one who takes him captive, that one would not take him captive.
