وَطِرفٍ تَخَيَّرتُهُ طُرفَةً

وَأَحبَبتُهُ مِن جَميعِ التُراثِ

And a fine steed I singled out as a rarity;

I loved it above all that I inherited.

حَوى بِبَدائِعِ أَوصافِهِ

مَضاءَ الذُكورِ وَصَبرَ الإِناثِ

Among its marvelous qualities, it combined

the dash of stallions with the endurance of mares.

إِذا اِنقَضَّ كَالصَقرِ في مَعرَكٍ

تَرى الخَيلَ في إِثرِهِ كَالبُغاثِ

When it plunged like a falcon into battle,

you saw the horses in its wake as bughāth—feeble birds.

طَويلِ الثَلاثِ قَصيرِ الثَلاثِ

عَريضِ الثَلاثِ فَسيحِ الثَلاثِ

Long in three, short in three;

broad in three, spacious in three.
