1. وَقَهوَةٍ يُجتَلى السُرورُ بِها

    وَتَنجَلي بِاِنجِلائِها الكُرَبُ

    With coffee joy and cheer abound

    Its splendor makes all grief recede

  2. جَلَوتُها وَالخُطوبُ غافِلَةٌ

    وَقَد تَجَلَّت في أُفقِها الشُهُبُ

    Heedless of fate, it can be found

    To kindle hope when woes stampede

  3. وَبِتُّ أُغري بِها أَخا صَلَفٍ

    قَد نَشَّفَتهُ الدُروسُ وَالكُتُبُ

    I coaxed a dour friend to try a sip

    Whose temper books had dried up stiff

  4. باتَ بِرُغمي ضَيفاً لَدَيَّ ولا

    يَعلَمُ أَنّي بِمِثلِهِ تَعِبُ

    He was my guest but little knew

    I likewise found life harsh and tough

  5. فَقالَ لي مُغضَباً لِيُرشِدَني

    مِثلُكَ لا يَستَخِفَّهُ الطَرَبُ

    Reproving me, he sought to teach

    "Fickle friends calamity can breach"

  6. فَقُلتُ هَلّا رَأَيتَ صَيغَتَها

    كَأَنَّها في الزُجاجِ تَلتَهِبُ

    I said "Behold its shapely glass

    As if therein flames clashed and meshed

  7. وَطَعمُها لَو عَرَفتَ لَذَّتَهُ

    لَزالَ عَنكَ الوَقارُ وَالأَدَبُ

    And taste it! Joy would come to pass

    If you this manners breach freshened"

  8. نُطفَةُ كَرمٍ فُوَيقَها حَبَبٌ

    كَأَنَّهُنَّ الرَضابُ وَالشَنَبُ

    The fruit of vines by honey graced

    As buds and bunches interlaced

  9. فَاِزدادَ يُبساً وَقامَ مُمتَعِضاً

    وَلاحَ فيهِ النَفارُ وَالغَضبُ

    More arid still, he rose, disgusted

    Scowling and to anger rustled

  10. وَقالَ لا ذُقتُها فَقُلتُ لَهُ

    مِن مِثلِ ذا اليُبسِ يَحدُثُ الجَرَبُ

    "Not a sip will I take" he maintained

    I said "It's your aridity such drought has sustained"
