Alas! Where is my cup that I may drink it
For I care not for the days as they come and go
Let me fully enjoy life and its pleasures
And steal the delights of life and plunder
And recite my verses while my heart rejoices
And my soul yearns for the cup of comfort
How often I repeated to myself the poet Kindah
When I toss and turn in the night of sorrow
Alas! Would that I knew if I should compose a poem
In which I neither complain nor reproach
Then I said to it, gently, your reproach is sweet
But your patience with the days is sweeter
And I said, such is the world, it takes away
Its ways are to give and then take away
Enough that I spent my life and still
Remain in the gatherings of friends, amused and delighted
And I have private moments that I loved in the darkness
If not for the darkness, no stars shine in the sky
