كم طوى الدهرُ عليها أُمما
ومحاها من سجلّ الكائنات
How many nations has time folded over it
And erased it from the record of existence
هكذا يطوي ويمحو طالَما
سنواتٌ فيه تَتلو سنوَات
Thus it folds and erases time and again
Years in which years follow one another
دوَلٌ في دورها قد لعِبَت
ثمّ بادت وبدت أخرى تدول
States have played in their cycles
Then faded and others cycle
وبهذا الكون أسرارٌ خَبَت
نحت مكنوناتها نار العقول
And in this universe are hidden secrets
Carved by the fire of minds
ومطايا الفكر فيها قد كَبَت
حائراتٍ لا تَعي كيف تجول
And the probes of thought wandered in it
Perplexed, not knowing how to explore
بَينَما المَرءُ يُرى مُبتسما
ولهُ الأيام تبدو زاهرات
While man is seen smiling
And days seem prosperous to him
إذ ترَاهُ يذرف الدمع دما
شَرقاً من حزنِه بالعبَرَات
You see him shedding tears of blood
Complaining of his sorrow in lamentations
هذِه الدنيَا وما فيها غرور
عبَثاً ترجو من الدنيا السّلام
This world and what is in it is vanity
In vain you hope for peace from the world
أرضعَتنَا ثَديَ أنسٍ وسرور
وسَقَتنا المرّ من بَعد الفطام
It suckled us at the breast of intimacy and cheer
And gave us bitterness after weaning
فإلامَ هذه الدّنيَا تجور
إِنّ هذا ليس من شأنِ الأنام
So why does this world tyrannize?
This is not the practice of people
حكمَ الله بنا ما حَكَما
فاقصرِ البحث بهذي الغامضات
God has judged us as He deemed fit
So stop searching into these obscure matters
وبحبلِ الله كُن مُعتَصِما
لا تَسل عمّا بطيّ الخافيات
And hold firmly to God’s rope
Do not ask about what the hidden conceals
عندما سلطانة البحر سَرَت
لَيلَةً تزهو بأبهَى الحلَلِ
When the queen of the sea sailed
One night, boasting in the most splendid dress
كعرُوسٍ في الدّجى قد خطرت
وهيَ بكرٌ بالشقا لم تَحفلِ
Like a bride in the darkness she sailed
An innocent girl, not caring for the pitch-dark
وعقول الناس منها سُحِرَت
عَجَباً لمّا رأوهَا تَنجَلي
And people's minds were spellbound by her
How wondrous she looked to them gliding
كشهابٍ نورُها شَقّ السّما
أو غَدت إحدى النجوم السابحات
Like a shooting star, her light splitting the sky
Or she became one of the swimming stars
ليتَ شعري في الوَرَى من علما
أنها خُطَّت بسفر الحادثات
I wonder who in the world knew
That she was destined in the book of fate
فدَعوها تَتَباهى عن رضى
مَا لَها في السيرِ من مُنتَقِدِ
So they let her boast without approval
For she had no critics in her sailing
حسَدتها رُبّما زُهرُ الفَضَا
فَأصابَتها بِعَينش الحَسِدِ
Maybe the blooms of space envied her
And gave her the evil eye out of envy
أو هوَ الناموس في حكم القضا
لم يدَعهَا تَتَباهى لِغَدِ
Or it was destiny in the decree of fate
It did not let her boast until tomorrow
صَدَمَت طودَ جَلِيدٍ قد سَما
لم يُعِيرُوه اعتِنَاءً والتِفَات
She collided with a towering iceberg
They paid it no heed or attention
إنّما لما بها الخطبُ طمى
علِموا كيفَ اصطِدام الرّاسيات
But when danger overwhelmed her
They knew how ill-fated ships collide
صيحَة لله لمّا ازدَحَمُوا
قامَ موجُ البحرِ منها وقَعَد
They cried out to God when they were gathered
And the sea's wave rose up then settled
آهِ لَو للبَحر عَقلٌ وَدَم
كان لَما عَاينَ الخطب جَمَد
Oh, if only the sea had a mind and blood
It would have frozen when it saw the danger
كم عرُوسٍ عن عريسٍ فصَمُوا
مثلما تُفصمُ رُوحٌ عَن جَسَد
How many a bride parts from the groom
As a soul parts from a body
تَقرَعُ السنّ عَلَيهِ نَدمَا
وَتُنَاجي رَبّهَا بالحَسرَات
Regret pounds her teeth
And she complains to her Lord in sorrow
ربّ إِني عِفتُ روحي ألَما
لَيتَني ما كنتُ في هذي الحياة
O Lord, I have suffered much pain
If only I was not in this life
طَيَّرُوا البَرقَ بأرجَاءِ الأثير
فَغَدا فِيهِ يصِيحُ المَدَدا
They shot lightning across the ether
And it started shrieking for help
في فضَاءٍ عندهُ عَزّ النّصير
وبحورٍ جَرّدَت سيفَ الرّدى
In a space where it had no protector
And seas that unsheathed the sword of destruction
وكبير القَومِ فِيهِم كالصّغير
لمَلاكِ المَوتِ كُلٌّ سَجَدا
And the great among them became like the small
All bowing down to the angel of death
فانشَنَت كرباثيا من بعد ما
مَزّقَ البرقُ أَديمَ السّمَوَات
Then disaster struck after what
The lightning tore the veil of the heavens
وَجَرَت تَوّاً تَشُقّ الظُّلَمَا
نحوَ مَن ضاقَت بهم سبلُ النجاة
It raced continuously, splitting the darkness
Towards those whose paths of salvation narrowed
لم يكن للخيل في الحربِ صَهيل
لا ولا فيها صَلِيلٌ للسيوف
The horses had no neighing in battle
No clanging of swords
مُهَجٌ في لَججٍ باتت تسِيل
جَزَعاً من مشرَفيّاتِ الحتوف
Terrified, sinking into quicksand
In dread of the looming cliffs
وسَرَاةُ القومِ كم منهُم قتِيل
كانَ لو يحيَا به تَحيَا ألوف
And the elite of the people, how many killed
Who, had they lived, would have kept thousands alive
كم شجاعٍ قد عَنَا مستسلما
وهو لا يعنو لحدّ المرهفات
How many a brave man surrendered voluntarily
Though he had no regard for death
وأبيّ النفس أودى كَرَما
كَفِداءٍ عن نفوس السيّدات
And the proud soul led to destruction honorably
A ransom for the souls of ladies
يا لَهُ ليلاً تَجَنّى واعتَدى
رَاخياً مِنهُ عَلى الصّبحِ سِتار
Oh what a night it slyly attacked
Relaxed against the dawn a barrier
مَأتَمٌ للنّاسِ فيه قَد غَدا
وهو عرسٌ عند حيتانِ البِحَار
A mourning spot for the people it became
While for sea monsters it was a wedding
كم كميٍ سيفه قد أَغمدا
وشجاعٍ حيثُ سارَ القَومُ سار
How many a brave sheathed his sword
And courageous men walked where the people walked
صَبّتِ الدّنيَا عليهِم نِقَما
وبهم قد ضَاقَتِ المُنفرجات
The world poured vengeance upon them
And for them the passes narrowed
وغَدا مَن كانَ يرَعى الذمما
مثل من كانوا لدى الحقّ جُناة
And those who used to preserve reputations
Became like those who were criminals in truth
وَتَلَوا لمّا دنا وقتُ الوَدَاع
رَبّنَا إنّا إِلَيكَ أَقرَبُ
They bid farewell when the time of parting came
"Our Lord, to You we are nearer"
عَلَلُوا أنفسهُم بالإجتِمَاع
عَل مُرّ الموتِ فِيهِ يَعذُبُ
They blamed themselves for gathering
For bitter death's torment
وَهوَوا في قاعِ بحرٍ أيّ قاع
مَاؤهُ هَيهات فِيهِ ينضبُ
And they sank into the depths of a sea
Whose water will never deplete
فَاحفَظَن يا بحر تلكَ الرّمَمَا
إنها تُعزَى لأًبطالٍ كُمَاة
So preserve, O sea, those relics
For they belong to fallen heroes
ليس للدُّرّ الذي فيكَ كَمَا
لرُفاتٍ مثل هذي حَسَنَات
The pearls in you are not like
Such blessed remains
يا نُجوماً رَافَقَت هذا الوُجُود
من دُهورٍ وبِها الله عليم
O stars, you have witnessed this existence
Since eras past, and God is All-Knowing
بلغت كرباثيا ذاكَ المَقَام
حيثُ أشباحُ الرّدى تَزدَحِمُ
Disaster reached that position
Where the ghosts of doom crowd
خَطفَت من مخلبِ الموتِ الزّؤام
كلّ مَن في البحرِ حَيّاً منهُمُ
It snatched from the claw of death the victims
Everyone in the sea alive among them
وبهم جاءَت إِلى هذا الحِمى
فَأحَلّوهَا مَكَانَ النّيرَات
With them it came to this sanctuary
And they made it instead of lamps
ليتَ ذا الدهر بهذا خَتَما
وَكَفانَا شَرَّهُ والنّائِبَات
If only time had ended with this
And spared us its evils and afflictions
لم يكُن للخَطبِ إِلاّكِ شُهود
فوق ذاك البحر في الليل البهيم
There were no witnesses to the tragedy
Except you above that dreadful sea
كيفَ حال القوم في دار الخلود
يا تُرَى هم في نعيمٍ أم جحيم
How are the people faring in the abode of eternity
In bliss or torment, I wonder
فَلَعَمري ليسَ إِلاّ حُلُما
ذلك الفِردَوس قَصّتهُ الرّوَاة
By my life, it is nothing but a dream
That paradise the storytellers tell of
وجحيم القَومِ أمسى عِندَما
خبطوا في لجّجٍ في ظُلُمات
And the people's hell became when
They floundered in deep darkness
سلّ سيف الصبحِ من غمد الظلام
وتَوَارَت في الفضاءِ الأنجُمُ
The sword of dawn unsheathed from the scabbard of darkness
And the stars disappeared into the void
بلغت كرباثيا ذاكَ المَقَام
حيثُ أشباحُ الرّدى تَزدَحِمُ
Disaster reached that position

كلّ مَن في البحرِ حَيّاً منهُمُ
