O snow, you have stirred my sorrows
Reminding me of my family in Lebanon
For God's sake, say to my brothers
That he still upholds the sanctity of the covenant
O snow, you reminded me of the valley
Curving gracefully with its mighty torrents
How often I sat in its peaceful embrace
As though in the gardens of eternity
O snow, you reminded me of my mother
Days when she would stay up worrying for me
Anxiously fretting over holding me close
Fearing the cold's harm upon me
O snow, you reminded me of the hearth
When we would gather around chanting
Praying by it as though it were a mosque
And we ascetics in devotion
O snow, dress in your radiant robe
And purity like that of a poet
If you knew people, O pure one
You would flee from them no matter how far
If you did not melt from the sigh of my heart
Or my tears pouring down like rain
I would build from you temples of love
And carve into their pillars a grave
O how the stars shine when they appear
And the snow covers the land like ghosts
While the poor poet mourns
Spending the nights lost and confused
If you are ignorant in comfort
Or learned while in hardship
I do not think the telling of life
And its rounds are more than jest without purpose
O soul, call upon the Lord of the Throne
O Sustainer of the buzzing flies in the night shelters
And arm yourself with patience, then walk on
There must be an ebb after every flow
