وَداعٍ دَعا إِذ نَحنُ بِالخَيفِ مِن مِناً
فَهَيَّجَ أَشجانَ الفُؤادِ وَما يَدري
And a caller called while we were at al-Khayf in Mina,
stirring the heart’s sorrows, all unknowing.
دَعا بِاِسمِ لَيلى غَيرَها فَكَأَنَّما
أَهاجَ بِلَيلى طائِراً كانَ في صَدري
He called another—not her—by the name of Layla, and it was as though
with “Layla” he had roused a bird that dwelt within my breast.
