فُؤادٌ عَلى حفظ الوِداد مُقيمُ
بِهِ لَكَ شَوق مُقعدٌ وَمُقيمُ
A heart steadfast in friendship’s preservation
In it, yearning for you dwells, settled and fixed
وَقَلب عَلى نار البعاد مُقلّبٌ
يَهيج بِهِ برح الأَسى فيهيمُ
A heart tossed about in the fire of distance
Wherein grief is violently stirred and flung
وَطَرف طَريف قَد جَفا جفنهُ الكَرى
حَسير عَلى بُعد الدِيار سَقيمُ
An eye whose lid misery has desiccated
Languishing, far from home, sick and waning
أَبى بَعد بُعد الدار أَن يفتدى لَهُ
سَمير سِوى نجم السها وَنَديمُ
The home’s remoteness refused liberation
Except the Suhail star and intimate friend
وَصبٌّ إِذا هَبَّ الصبا صبَّ دَمعَهُ
لِتُروى طُلول في الحِمى وَرُسومُ
A love when the breeze blew, shedding his tears
To water yearnings in ardour consuming
فَحَتّى مَتى يَحدو بِنا البين آخِذاً
زِمام التَنائي إنَّهُ لَذَميمُ
How long will separation take us in tow
Grasping the lead of estrangement, so noxious?
لِمَن اِشتَكى الدُنيا وَكُلّ مُهذَّب
تمنّيه بِالحرمان وَهيَ ظلومُ
For one who complained of life and refined one
His wish in deprivation, though unjust
إِذا سامَها رَشحاً مِنَ البِرِّ أَمطَرَت
عَلَيهِ غُيوماً كُلّهنَّ غُمومُ
Should he appease it with righteous rain, it would pour
Upon him clouds, wholly gloom
لعمرك ما الدُنيا سِوى جَوف جيفة
عَلَيها كِلاب الطامِعين تَحومُ
By your life! Naught is the world but a corpse’s cavity
Round which expectant hounds mill and rove
وَسيّان فيها بُؤسهم وَنَعيمهم
فَإِنَّ كِلا الأَمرين لَيسَ يَدومُ
Indistinct in it are their woe and joy
For neither endures nor permanent proves
فَلُذ باِقتصاد العَيش وَاِبغ تَوسّطاً
فَحُبّ التَناهي في الأُمور ذَميمُ
So grasp moderation and middle way seek!
For extremism in affairs is pernicious
إِذا ملك المَرء اليَسار وَلَم يَكُن
كَفاه كَفاف العَيش فَهوَ مَلومُ
If one owns affluence but self-restraint lacks
Bare living expenses do not suffice him, blameworthy is he!
فَلا تَأَمنَنَّ الدَهر يَوماً وَإِن صَفا
فَكُلّ زَمان للكَريم خَصيمُ
So never trust time, howsoever unclouded
For every era to the noble is rival
أَحبُّ الوَرى لِلدَهر أَحمَقُ جاهِلٌ
وَأَعدى عَدوٍّ لِلزَمان حَليمُ
The world's most foolish dullard is its beloved
And its most hostile foe is the patient one
