1. حَبائل البرّ في اِستعطاف ذي الهيف

    بَذل اللهى دون بَذل المَدمع الذَرفِ

    The cords of innocence in appeasing the stern

    Sacrificing ardour without shedding a tear

  2. فَاِستَعمل الحَزم فيما أنت قاصدهُ

    وَدَع أمانيك إنّ الأمر غير خفي

    So use resolve in what you intend

    And leave your wishes for the matter is not obscure

  3. لو أنّ للمدمع المِهراق مَنفَعَةً

    لَكانَ كُلّ مَن اِستَشفى بِذاكَ شفي

    If shedding tears had any use

    All who were healed would have been cured

  4. لصرّة أَشتري وَصل الحَبيب بِها

    أَحبّ مَن بَيع روحي مِنهُ عَن شَغَفي

    With a dirham I’d buy the affection of the beloved

    I love whoever would sell my soul for my fervour

  5. عِندي من الدَمع ما يهدى الجَميل بِهِ

    لَو كانَ ذَلِكَ مَعدوداً مِن التُحفِ

    I have such tears to present to the beautiful one

    Were they counted among gifts

  6. لِلّه درّ اللهى بِالسحر قَد غلبت

    سِحر اللواحظ ذات الغنج وَالوَطفِ

    Praise God the beloved has conquered with magic

    The magic of glances, coquetry and charm

  7. إِنّ الدَراهم مِغناطيس كُلّ رَشا

    يرشى بِها كُلّ ذي عطف وَذي صَلفِ

    Verily money attracts every amenable or obstinate person

    Bribed with it is each gentle or rough

  8. وَفي الدَنانير إِرغام الأُسود كَما

    أَنّ الظبا تَأنف التَقليد بِالخَزَفِ

    And dinars have power over lions

    As gazelles disdain to imitate with pottery

  9. لا يرحَم الأَغيد المَعشوق عاشقه

    بِغَيرهنَّ وَلَو أَمسى عَلى جرفِ

    The charms show no mercy to the lover

    Without them, even if he is left destitute

  10. ما يَنفَع الرَشأ الوسنان لَو سَهرت

    عَيناك فيهِ شَقاً وَهوَ في تَرَفِ

    A withered branch cannot benefit

    Even if your eyes strain for it while it lives in luxury

  11. وَما يَضرّ خليّ البال مِن كَلَف

    لَو اِنَّ بَلواك قَد أفضَت إِلى التَلَفِ

    Just as distress of mind and anxiety cannot harm

    Even if your trials have led to ruin

  12. لا تَشكونَّ الجَفا ما دُمت ذا سعة

    فَالمال يبرئ جرحَ العاشق الدَنفِ

    Do not complain of aloofness as long as you have means

    For money heals the slash of a spurned lover’s wounds

  13. وَكَم بِبَذل الأَيادي نال مَأمله

    مُستَعطف غُصن بان غَير مُنعطفِ

    And how many gained their hopes

    By entreating the compliant bough

  14. وَلا تضع بِالتَواني فُرصة سَنَحَت

    ما في التَواني سِوى التَفريط وَالأَسَفِ

    Do not miss an opportunity when it presents itself

    Hesitation leads only to loss and regret

  15. وَإِنَّما تَألف النَفس الَّتي شَرفت

    جَمال كُلّ مَنيع لنيل ذي شَرَفِ

    For the soul aspires to what is noble

    To attain the highly esteemed

  16. قَد كانَ كُلّ جَمال غَير مُبتذل

    وَالآن قَد صارَ مَعدوداً مِن الحرفِ

    Once all beauty was sacrosanct

    Now it is considered merely merchandise

  17. لا خَير في الحُسن ما دامَت بضاعته

    يباع جَوهرها في قيمة الصَدَفِ

    No good in beauty if its wares

    Are sold for the price of shells

  18. إِنّي أنزّه نَفسي أَن يدنّسها

    تَمويه مُختلفٍ في زيِّ مُؤتلفِ

    I keep my soul pure, not to be defiled

    By deceptive guise in harmonious attire

  19. فَإِن أَكُن بَعض آثام جَنيت فَما

    أَنا إِلى غَير غَفّار بِمعترفِ

    If I have committed some sins

    I confess to none but the All-Forgiving

  20. لا تَطمَعن في بَني الدُنيا بِنَيل وَفىً

    فَلَيسَ في الناس خلّاً بِالوِداد يَفي

    Do not hope for loyalty from people of this world

    For no one fulfils a pact of affection

  21. وَالناس شَطران ذو مكر وَذو حَسَدٍ

    أَيّ الفَريقين تَبغي أَن يَكون صفي

    People are of two kinds: devious and envious

    Which group would you have as allies?
