1. She came, swaying proudly; never did she gaze at you as a gazelle

    without showing you a lion in her glances.

  2. A slender-waisted beauty whom the east wind made sway, as though

    her supple curves had been given tender passions to drink as intoxicating wine.

  3. The pride of coyness bent her, and I imagined her

    a fruit-laden bough that gentle breezes had inclined toward me.

  4. She smiled, revealing the side-teeth of a languid beauty,

    dark-lipped, gathering every charm, with wide, deep-black eyes.

  5. Then I beheld what lay between al-ʿUdhayb and Bāriq:

    my tears and my patience—one Najd-bound, the other descending to the lowlands.

  6. Never did I go on scattering the rubies of my tears

    without seeing the smiling mouth string pearls.

  7. It seemed as though he were, by the ordered canon of my creed,

    a nobleman who through his refinement rose to the loftiest peaks—

  8. an astute man named al-Khalīl, because he

    transmits fidelity from the one who instituted hospitality.

  9. He is that faithful friend; may my sanctuary never be

    bereft of him—through his kindness it has blossomed.

  10. At evening he fashions the ornaments of verse with a mind

    whose reflection never misses an exquisite meaning,

  11. and with acuity born of the clarity of a limpid intellect,

    whose delightful spring has never grown turbid.

  12. He bestowed on us a maiden, a sun of eloquence;

    from her face the dawn of rhetoric broke forth unveiled.

  13. I can see no price for her that I could ever furnish,

    nor is a freeborn woman among us sold and then bought.

  14. No indeed! Nor is there a dowry for one like her, for

    her dazzling beauty has made her too precious to be dowered.

  15. May the weaver of the mantle of her beauty’s grace ever remain

    adorned with the ornaments of nobility among humankind.

  16. Whenever a north wind breathes perfume from those gracious traits,

    its fragrance makes even the fragrant blossoms exhale perfume;

  17. or whenever al-Khalīl’s affection runs pure, I recite:

    May this affection never cease, its bonds firmly knit.
