1. Bear the message to us, O wind of the Hijaz,

    for you have lifted anguish from the sorrowing heart.

  2. Revive the heart with remembrance of the beloved ones, O

    east wind—for the dwellings of Mina are my heart’s desire.

  3. And of Tayba’s sanctuary, repeat the tidings to me,

    for tidings retold yield the sweetest harvest of delights.

  4. May the rain revive that noble dwelling and whoever

    is within it—for through him I need no created being.

  5. There dwell noble virtues, all-embracing bounty, and all that

    creatures seek there in attaining their desires.

  6. What a heart the ardent lover has—it has never known rest,

    not for a day, at remembrance of the one who became its dwelling.

  7. Nor did the lightning of al-Abraqayn ever flash resplendently

    without robbing the sorrowing one’s eyelids of sleep.

  8. Between my heart and the departing caravan I discern

    a covenant: whenever its beloved ones depart, both depart.

  9. Were it not for the eyelids’ tears, by which there died down

    the fire of sorrow, the grief-stricken lover would have melted from passion’s heat.

  10. Restore my heart! For God has restored to it

    its beloved ones; restore, too, whatever in it has grown frail.

  11. Seek out the tidings that the herald came bearing,

    for they healed the lover of the wasting sickness that afflicted him.

  12. May those people rejoice who, by God’s grace, have attained

    the Hajj, made the visitation, and fulfilled the obligation and the Sunnas.

  13. They won their hearts’ desires; then, when they returned at last,

    we said to them, “Welcome! You have honored the homeland.”

  14. Welcome to them, and to him who came at their head,

    like the full moon, more radiant than all the stars in splendor.

  15. Welcome to the rising of a full moon, appearing in joy;

    good fortune and the loftiest ascendant have indeed conjoined.

  16. Glory was not content to name him one full moon of guidance;

    rather, honoring him, it said, “Two full moons,” and doubled the name.

  17. That is the valiant lord whose qualities have become

    like the rose—the loveliest of things in appearance and radiance.

  18. A master whose merits, whenever recounted among us,

    were, on any day, paths toward rectitude and guidance.

  19. The delegation recounted to us every noble virtue of his,

    until every eye, because of them, came to envy the ear.

  20. This indeed is the glory with which a noble man is adorned;

    he is not adorned by riches, whatever their weight.

  21. No wonder: he is al-Husayn, son of al-Husayn; and thus

    every quality he possesses comes to be seen as beautiful.

  22. Gifts from God’s bounty—he secured them

    through gratitude, till blessings followed one another and rose.

  23. So unfurl over him the banner of praise whenever

    those worthy of praise are mentioned, and say, “The people of praise are here.”

  24. Stand in his assembly and raise a rejoicing voice

    with congratulations, just as joy has arisen among us.

  25. And congratulate us: his return is a feast for our souls,

    one that endures, while Eid comes among us only for a time.

  26. Congratulate whomever you wish upon his sublime eminence, and do not

    single anyone out for it, whether far away or near.

  27. And with congratulations for him, O maker of chronograms, say:

    “May God accept the Hajj you attained in happiness.”
