وَقائِلَةٍ ما لي أَرى الناس أَصبَحَت
ذبالة أعصار السِنين العَوابسِ
And a woman asked, “Why do I see the people reduced to
the refuse of ages of grim, scowling years?”
فَقُلت لَها إني وَعَيشك فاعل
بِهم يا مَهاة الخدر فعل المَكانسِ
I said to her, “By your life, I shall do
to them, O gazelle of the curtained chamber, what brooms do.
فَلَست بِمستبقٍ لَهُم مِن بَقيّةٍ
يضرّ قَذاها في عُيون المجالسِ
For I am not one to spare them any remnant
whose mote offends the eyes of assemblies.”
