هَواك بِفاتر الأَجفان زِنهُ
وَسَمعك عَن سَماع العذل صنهُ
His love enslaves my heavy eyelids
And blocks my ears from heeding advice
بِنَفسي مَن شَكا الواشون مِنهُ
وَقالوا بع حَبيبك واِبغِ عَنهُ
With my own soul have I heard the slanderers accuse him
And bid, “Sell your beloved and seek another
حَبيباً آخراً تَحيا سَعيدا
فَقُلت لَهُم مَقالة ذي اِعتراف
That you may live in bliss”
To them I made a full confession and said
وَلَكنّي جَنحت إِلى الخلافِ
ألا يا صائِغين حُلى القَوافي
“Nay, I have chosen otherwise”
O you who string the pearls of verse
إِذا كانَ القَديم هُوَ المُصافي
وَخانَ فَكَيف أَأتمن الجَديدا
If the old proves true, how can I trust the new?
