إِذ زُرت مَن يَستثقلوا مِنكَ جانِباً
فَجانِبهُمُ وَاِربأ بِنفسك ذاكيا
When you visit those who find your company burdensome,
then shun them, and wisely preserve your dignity.
وَلا تطمع الآمال في الودّ إِنَّهُ
إِذا ما أَمضَّ الداءُ أَعيا المُداويا
Do not pin your hopes on affection—for indeed,
when sickness causes agony, it baffles the physician.
قَبيحٌ بِمَلدوغ مِن الوَكرِ مَرَّةً
إِذا عادَ مُغتَرّاً إِلى الوكر ثانيا
It is shameful for one once bitten at the lair
if, deluded, he returns to the lair a second time.
