1. تقارن النيّران الشَمس وَالقَمَرُ

    فَأَشرَق الطالعان السَعد وَالظفرُ

    The sun and moon are compared to fires

    The sunrise and victory emerged radiantly

  2. وَقامَ داعي الهَنا يَدعو السُرور لَنا

    يَزفّه المطربان النايُ وَالوَتَرُ

    The caller to joy calls out, bringing us happiness

    Played by the two, the flute and guitar

  3. رَعى لَيالي بِالبُشرى قَدِ اِبتَهجَت

    فَاِستبشر العالَمانِ الروح وَالبَشَرُ

    The nights have brought good news and rejoiced

    So the two worlds, soul and humanity, have received good news

  4. تَتلو المَثاني بِها الأَقمار مُشرِقَة

    فَيطرب الأَفضلان السَمع وَالبَصَرُ

    The rising moons recite poems to it

    Bringing joy to the two best, hearing and sight

  5. سَقى الحِمى وَحماهُ اللَه غادية

    يروى بِها المعشران البَدو وَالحَضَرُ

    It gave water to the sanctuary and Allah protected it passing by

    With it the two groups, nomads and settled folk are watered

  6. تِلكَ المَنازل ما زالَت مَطالعها

    يَهفو لَها التائقان القَلب وَالنَظَرُ

    Those abodes, their rising places have not ceased

    The two yearning, heart and sight, covet them

  7. رِياض أُنس إِذا غَنَّت بَلابلها

    يسبّح الساجِدان النجم وَالشَجَرُ

    Gardens of intimacy, when their nightingales sing

    The two prostrating, star and tree, glorify

  8. راقَت وَرقّت على صَفوٍ مَناهلها

    حَتّى اِنتَفى الشائِبان الهمّ وَالكَدَرُ

    It flowed gently over meadows, its springs

    Until the two flaws, worry and discontent, disappeared

  9. فَلا سرت عَن رُبوع الفَضل سارية

    أَو تحمد الغايتان الوِرد وَالصَدرُ

    Traveling from the environs of virtue unhindered

    The two praised, rose and breast, laud it

  10. وَلا اِنبَرَت أَغصُن الأَفراح يانِعَةً

    يَزهو بِها الطيّبان النورُ وَالثَمَرُ

    Nor have the branches of joy burgeoned

    The two beautiful, light and fruit, flourish through them

  11. وَلا تَقضّت لَيالي الأُنس في مَلأٍ

    يُلفى بِها المؤنسان اللَهو وَالسَمَرُ

    Nor have the nights of intimacy passed in fullness

    In them the two companions, play and night talk, are wrapped

  12. جَعَلت تِذكارها لي في العُلى غَزَلاً

    مَحَلّه الرتبتان المَجد وَالخَطَرُ

    I made their memory for myself in the heights a love

    In rank the two, glory and danger, are its place

  13. فَلا مُغازلة الغزلان تَمنعني

    عَن بيضها الدَولَتان البيض وَالسمرُ

    So the two gazelles' flirtation does not stop me

    From their eggs the two colors, white and brown

  14. أَسري فَأَستطلع السرّ المَصون فَلا

    يَصدُّني القاتلان الخَوف وَالحَذَرُ

    I travel so I can discover the guarded secret so

    The two killers, fear and caution, do not bar me

  15. نِعمَ الجسارة كانَ الفَوز غايَتَها

    وَبئست الغايتان الجُبن وَالخورُ

    How excellent boldness was, its goal victory

    And wretched the two goals, cowardice and shame

  16. لا أَعشق المرد أَهواها وَيُهلكني

    مِن أَجلِها المرديان السُهد وَالسَهَرُ

    I do not love one who rejects me though I love her

    And because of her the two rejecters, wakefulness and loss of sleep, destroy me

  17. وَإِنَّما العَين تَستَغني بِغانيةٍ

    مِنها حَلا المطلبان العين وَالأَثَرُ

    But the eye is only satisfied with a singing girl

    Through her the two wishes, eye and trace, are fulfilled

  18. بَدَت لَنا بَين أَترابٍ تَرائبها

    خَفيرها الحارِسان اللَحظ وَالخَفَرُ

    She appeared between tents, her veil

    Guarded by the two guards, glance and vigilance

  19. عَين مِن العرب في أَجفانِها خزر

    هامَ الفَريقان فيهِ الترك وَالخَزَرُ

    An eye of the Arabs, in her eyelids a Tartar

    The two groups were confused by her, Turk and Tartar

  20. مَن لي بِعَقلي أَن يَصحو فَأرشده

    وَحَوله الساحِران الغنج وَالحوَرُ

    Who can make my reason sober so I may guide it

    While the two sorcerers, coquetry and fascination, bewilder it

  21. مِن كُلّ غالية تَزهو بِغاليةٍ

    فَيرخص الغاليان المال وَالعمرُ

    She is precious but boasts of a female companion

    So the two precious, wealth and life, become cheap

  22. شَمس عَلى غُصنِ بانٍ في كَثيب نقىً

    بِها زَها الداجيان اللَيل وَالشعرُ

    A sun on the branch of a willow in a pure sandhill

    Through it the two lights, night and poetry, shone

  23. وَربّ أَحوَر مَعشوق الدَلال بِهِ

    قَد حارَت الثَقلان الجنّ وَالبَشَرُ

    By Allah, many a fascinating beloved of coquetry

    The two weights, jinn and human, are confused about him

  24. أَشكو فأسكب دَمعي وَهوَ مُبتسم

    فَيجمع الساهِران البَرق وَالمَطَرُ

    I complain and pour out my tears while he smiles

    So the two watchers, lightning and rain, gather

  25. رِفقاً فَديتك يا ريم الصَريم فَقَد

    أَردانيَ الصارِمان اللَحظ وَالقَدَرُ

    Gently, your ransom, O fawn of Sarim, for

    The two executioners, glance and fate, have weakened me

  26. وا لوعتاه من اللاحي وَهجركَ لي

    بَراني المصميان اليَأس وَالضَجَرُ

    Oh woe to me from ardor and your estrangement

    The two determiners, despair and discontent, control me

  27. مَن لي بِبَيع الهَوى وَالغيّ يَتبعهُ

    لا رَدَّه المُفسدان الغبن وَالغررُ

    Who can help me sell this love and infatuation that follows it

    The two corrupters, loss and fraud, do not return it

  28. وَما اِلتفاتي إِلى الغيد الحِسان إِذا

    مَحاسن القَوم لاحَت أَينما ذكروا

    I do not pay attention to the singing girls if

    The people's beauties appear wherever they are mentioned

  29. أَرى كَواكب مَجدٍ في الحِمى طَلعت

    مِنها البُدور وَمِنها الأَنجُم الزُهرُ

    I see stars of glory that rose in the sanctuary

    Among them planets and among them shining stars

  30. بَنو أَبيهم أَبوا إِلا الكَمال فَما

    لَهُم مِن الصيت إِلّا المندل العَطرُ

    Their father's sons refused anything but perfection so

    Their fame is none but the scented bundle of basil
