أَدِر راح الصَفا وَلَكَ الأَمان
مِن العُقبى فَقَد صَلح الزَمانُ
The breeze of al-Safa blew, and you are safe
From misfortunes, for time has been reconciled.
وَطُف بِكؤوسها فَلَقد تَجلّت
نُجوماً لَيسَ يحجبهن رانُ
The cups went around, and the stars shone,
Unveiled stars that cannot be hidden.
صَواف كَالرَحيق بِهنَّ تَصفو
خَواطرنا وَيَنطلق اللِسانُ
Pure as perfume, through which
Our thoughts become clear, and the tongue is unleashed.
مُشعشعة تزفّ مع النَدامى
زفافَ البكر طافَ بِها الحِسانُ
Shining, they sang along with the drinking companions
The wedding songs of the virgin, surrounded by grace.
سلافاً مِن مُعتّقة التَهاني
سِوى الأَفراح لَيسَ لَها دِنانُ
Unconstrained greetings of joy—
They have no cares except happiness.
سَقانيها الهَنا بِرِياض أُنس
تناظرَ وَردها وَالأُقحوانُ
Their delight watered them in the meadows of intimacy,
Gazing at its roses and bright flowers.
وَغَنّى طَيرها طَرَباً فَقُلنا
أَسحرٌ بِالعُقول أَم اِفتِتانُ
Its birds sang merrily, so we said:
Are our minds bewitched, or is it infatuation?
وَساجعة عَلى بانٍ تَغنَّت
فَبانَ لَنا مِن السحر البَيانُ
A singing slave girl sang to us melodiously
And the eloquence of magic became clear.
بِأَلحانٍ أَرَتني الناس سكرى
فَقُلت هُناك ريحان وَحانُ
With tunes she showed me intoxicated people,
So I said, “Here is delight and affection.”
وَصادِحة إِلى فنن التَصابي
صبت وَلَها فُنون وَاِفتِتانُ
Calling out to the arts of musical rhythm,
She poured herself into them completely, fascinated.
إِذا هامَت بِها الأَرواح وَجداً
أَشارَت بِالأَكُفّ لَها البنانُ
When souls become inflamed with passion for her,
Palms gesture to her, enraptured.
سَقى صَوبُ العهاد عُهود أنسي
بِجَنّاتٍ يَتوق لَها الجِنانُ
She left us no sound mind—
Her garments, which are satin.
وَليلات كَواكبها اِستَنارت
كحور في تَرائبها جُمانُ
O Lord, the assembly in the garden of intimacy
Is Paradise, and the world is a garden.
سَهرنا تَنهبُ اللذّات نَهباً
جَوارحنا وَقَد نامَ الجَبانُ
The place He elevated with nobility and honor
Is a God whom no place can encompass.
وَقُمنا وَالحواس الخَمس تَهفو
بلابِلُها كَما هَتف القيانُ
It boasts of the beauty of a people
Whose high ranks are eternally balanced.
وَندمان قُبيلَ الصُبح هبّوا
بحيّ عَلى الصبوح لَها أذانُ
Nobles whom no guest can equal
In the generosity of their natures or humiliate.
أَباحهمُ الهَنا سَهر اللَيالي
فَما وَهنوا بذاك وَلا اِستَكانوا
Their souls are protected from any fault,
And in the ways of nobility are not to be faulted.
وجوه كَالبُدور التمِّ بيض
وَأَعطاف هِيَ السمرُ اللِدانُ
Choice souls, pure as musk,
Whose elixir has no smoke.
وَأحورُ صاغَهُ الرَحمَن درّاً
سِوى الشفة الَّتي هِيَ بهرمانُ
Like swift horses they have mounted them
And hold their reins to obey them.
بِجنّة وَجنتيهِ خلتُ ناراً
كَأَنّ الخال فيها موبذانُ
So they have won every race of virtues
While the horses of the helpless went astray.
بَدا مُتمايلاً تيهاً وَعجباً
وَمِن شَرخ الشَبيبة عُنفوانُ
O Hamadah, will I ever weary
Of praising you, even if time grows angry?
رَنا خشفاً وَهَزَّ قَناة قَدٍّ
وَماسَ وَلَيسَ كَالخبر العيانُ
I will spread your praise east and west,
And God, Most Generous, is my helper.
فَما أَدري وَدرع الصَبر ضافٍ
أَسيفٌ قَدّ درعي أَم سِنانُ
It is the lasting legacy that remains
For you and every person of prestigious time.
وَما تَرَكت لَنا عَقلاً رَشيداً
مَعاطفهُ الَّتي هِيَ خَيزرانُ
It suffices that my brother is of good repute—
Your saying has contained the manners of So-and-so.
فَيا لِلّه مَجلِسُ رَوض أُنسٍ
هُوَ الفردوس وَالدُنيا جنانُ
People have not known glory
Until the protectors of the heights defeated the tyrants.
مَكان شاده شَرَفاً وَعزّاً
إِلَهٌ لا يُحيط بِهِ مَكانُ
You have built, O descendants of the exalted, a glory
For which generosity is the interpreter.
تَباهى زينة بِجمال قَومٍ
بِهم رتب العُلى أَبَداً تزانُ
I do not consider one whom nobility has touched
Noble unless it has reached his heart and tongue.
كِرام لا يُضام لَهم نَزيل
عَلى كَرَم الطِباع وَلا يُهانُ
Pride in ambitious building is no nobility
If the builder cannot guarantee it.
تُصان نُفوسهُم عَن كُلّ رَيب
وَفي سُبل المَكارم لا تُصانُ
When steeds race to compete,
Donkeys lag behind their track.
نَفائسُ أَنفُسٍ كَالمسك تَزكو
نَوافجهُ وَلَيسَ لَها دُخانُ
You have spent your wealth, so it has risen nobly
With you, while everything squandered is disgraced.
كَجرد الصافِنات قَد اِمتَطوها
وَفي يَدهم لِطاعتها عنانُ
The Guide on High has granted you His favor
Intertwined with tenderness that will not abandon you.
فَنالوا بِالفَضائل كُلّ سَبق
وَخَيل العاجزين بِها حرانُ
Congratulations—drink it fresh,
As convoys of decency revolve around you.
أآل حَمادَةٍ ما زِلت أرضى
مَحامدكم وَإِن غَضب الزَمانُ
Cups of joy, brimming over,
Balancing minds without inclining.
سَأَنشُر مَدحكم شَرقاً وَغَرباً
وَبِاللَه الكَريم المُستَعانُ
Flirtatious, culling the pearls of meaning,
Tongues devoted to you select for you.
هُوَ الأَثر الَّذي يَبقى زَماناً
لَكُم وَلكلّ ذي شَرَف زَمانُ
With the good news of your children's weddings,
Noble scions have come to congratulate you as the time approaches.
كَفى بأَخي النَباهة طَيب ذكرٍ
وَقَولك قَد حَوى أَدَبا فُلانُ
Seven stars in the sky of glory
Have appeared radiantly as the stars align.
وَما عَرف الأَنام المَجد حَتّى
حَمت رُتب العُلى حَرب عَوانُ
Children of tender beauty who were nurtured
At the breast of nobility and suckled its milk.
بَنَيتُم يا بَني العَلياءِ مَجداً
لَهُ بَذل المَكارم ترجمانُ
Moons in their mansions though not destined
Their stations match the rising of moons.
وَما عدت الكَرامة مَن أَصابَت
يَداها قَلبَهُ وَلَهُ لِسانُ
Humility has brought them every glory.
They were ennobled by humility when they were disdained.
وَما شَرف التَطاول في بِناء
إِذا ما أَعجَز الباني الضَمانُ
So for us was their praise when we gathered
And for them was our joy when they were present.
إِذا ما الصافنات جَرَت لِسَبق
تَقاعس عَن مَداركها الهِجانُ
Our celebrations and holidays shine
With their New Year's and festivals.
بَذَلتُم مالَكُم فَسَما اِعتِزازاً
بِكُم وَلِكُلّ مُبتذل هَوانُ
With their children's weddings they invited us
To attain success, inviting with open hands.
حَباكُم ذو المَعارج مِن لَدُنه
زَكاة لا يُفارقها حَنانُ
Delight filled our hearts tumultuously—
Joys overflowed effervescently.
هَنيئاً فَاِشربوها سَلسَبيلاً
تَطوف لَكُم بِها الشِيَم الحِسانُ
As if by inspiration a voice called out
And spirit and mortal responded.
كُؤوساً بِالتَهاني مترعاتٌ
تزان بِها العُقول وَلا تُشانُ
They raced to congratulate,
As if a wager were between them.
وَغَرّاء اِنتَقَت غُرر المَعاني
يَخصّكم بِها اللسنُ المعانُ
All succeeded in attaining wishes,
And from fate we had security.
أَتَت بِختان أَنجال كِرام
تهنّئكم وَقَد آن الأَوانُ
Every caller announced the good news
To people, who showed gratitude for his call.
كَواكب سَبعة بِسَما المَعالي
بَدَت تجلى وَقَد سَعد القرانُ
The voice of celebration called out the date,
Radiant with the wedding stars of glory.
بَنو الغرّ الوُجوه رَبوا بِحجر ال
عُلى وَلَهُم بِثَدييها لِبانُ
بُدور في المَنازل غَير شانٍ
لَهُم بِمَطالع الأَقمار شانُ
أَنالَهُم التَواضع كُلّ مَجدٍ
فَعَزّوا بِالتَواضع حَيث هانوا
فَكانَ لَهُم ثَناءٌ حَيث كُنّا
وَكانَ لَنا سُرور حَيث كانوا
وَأَفراح هِيَ الأَعياد يَزهو
بِهم نَيروزها وَالمَهرجانُ
بِأَشبال ختانهمُ دَعانا
لِنَيل الفَوز دَعوَة من يَدانُ
هَناءٌ قَلبنا كُرَةٌ لَدَيهِ
تقلّبُ وَالمَسرّة صَولَجانُ
سَرى في الخافِقين كَأَنّ وَحياً
دَعا فَأَجابه إِنس وَجانُ
جَروا يَتسابَقون إِلى التَهاني
كَأَن قَد كانَ بَينَهُم رِهانُ
وَفازَ الكُلّ في طَلب الأَماني
وَكانَ مِن الزَمان لَنا أَمانُ
وَأَعلَن بِالبَشائر كُلّ داع
لِدَعوَتِهِ عَلى الناس اِمتنانُ
وَنادي الأنس بِالتاريخ نادى
زَها بِكَواكب المَجد الختانُ
