هَناءٌ وَإِسعادٌ وعزٌّ مُؤَبَّد

وَيمنٌ وَإِقبالٌ وَفَوزٌ مخلَّدُ

Delight and joy and enduring might

Good fortune and prosperity and immortalized victory

وَحمدٌ وَتَوفيق وَمَجد وَرفعة

وَبشر وَأفراح وَسَعد وَسُؤددُ

And praise and success and glory and highness

And glad tidings and joys and happiness and blessings

لِمَن هَذِهِ إِن قُلت قالَت لَكَ العُلى

مَقالة صدقٍ وَالمَآثر تَشهَدُ

Are for the one whom the most high says this of

Statements of truth and glorious deeds bear witness

لِمَن هُوَ في أَهل المَراتب واحِدٌ

لَهُ الفَخر في أَقرانِهِ وَالتَفرّدُ

For the one who among the ranks of the eminent is unique

Pride among his peers is his and singularity

لِمَن جمعت شَملَ المَكارم كَفُّهُ

عَلى أَن شملَ المال فيها مُبدَّدُ

For the one whose palm encompasses all virtues

While embracing wealth among them is diminished

لِمَن لَو دَعا المَجدُ المُروءةَ وَالنَدى

للبّاهُ مِنهُ طاهر الذَيل أَصيدُ

For the one whom if glory and chivalry were to call

The virtues in him, pure of tail, would answer

فَتىً يَصنَع المَعروف لا لاِكتِسابه

ثَناءً وَلَكن طَبعهُ البرُّ وَاليدُ

A young man who does good not for praise

But his nature is righteousness and generosity

خَبيرٌ بِأَحوال الأَنام مهذَّب

حَليم لَهُ نور الفراسة مُرشدُ

Wise in the states of people, well-mannered

Forbearing, enlightened by insight to guide

تَدابير ذي لُبٍّ وَحكمة عارفٍ

تُؤسّس بُنيان العلى وَتُشيّدُ

Plans of an intelligent and knowing one

Who establishes the building of the sublime and constructs

وَهمّةُ مِقدام وَسَطوةُ قسوَرٍ

هصورٍ إِذا ما قابل الأُسد ترعدُ

Brave resolve and powerful dominance

When facing a lion, formidable and thunderous

هُوَ الجَوهَر الفَرد الَّذي قَد تَعدّدت

مَزاياه فَضلاً وَهوَ لا يَتَعدّدُ

The peerless unique gem whose merits though numerous

In virtue while he is not numerous

عَزيزُ مثال لا لقلّة مَن نَمَت

مَعارفهم بَل مِثلهُ لَيسَ يوجَدُ

A dear ideal not for scarcity of those

Whose knowledge progressed but the like of him is not found

مهيبٌ مَتى ما تلقه تَلقَ فارِساً

يُقابل جَمعاً بَأسه وَهوَ مُفردُ

August when you meet him you meet a horseman

Who faces a group with his might while alone

تَقلّد سَيفَ الحلم حَزماً وَطالَما

تفيدُ النُهى ما لا يُفيدُ المُهَنَّدُ

He assumed the sword of forbearance with wisdom and oft

Advice benefits what threats do not benefit

رَفيع مَقام دونَ غايَته السُها

فَما فَوقَهُ نَسرٌ وَنجم وَفَرقَدُ

Of lofty position though below his limits

Above him an eagle, a star, and planets

كَسَت مَجدهُ أَخلاقه حُللَ الثَنا

عَلى أَنَّهُ مِن كُلِّ شَينٍ مُجَرّدُ

His glory is clothed in the garments of praise

Though he is free of any blemish

شَمائل لَو أَلقَت سَناً مِن شُعاعها

عَلى عَبد رقٍّ لاِنثنى وَهوَ سَيّدُ

Attributes that if they shed light on

A subservient slave he would straighten and become master

فَللّهِ مِنهُ ماجِدٌ لَيسَ هَمُّهُ

مِن الكسب إِلّا ما بِهِ الذكر يخلدُ

So to God what he glorifies, his care is not

For any gain but what immortalizes his mention

أَغَرّ إِذا مَدَّ الظَلام رواقه

بِطَلعَتِهِ تُهدى السراة وَتُرشدُ

Dazzling, when darkness extends its porch

With his rising, the wanderers are guided and directed

مَناقبهُ آيات حَقٍّ عَلى المَلا

متى تُليت كادَت لَها الهام تسجدُ

His merits are signs of truth over mankind

When recited, minds nearly bow down in prostration

وَأَخلاقُهُ في كُلِّ شَرقٍ وَمَغربٍ

حَديثٌ عَن المَجدِ المُؤثّلِ مُسنَدُ

His morals in every east and west

News of enduring glory relayed and supported

حُسامٌ يُرجّى عَفوه وَهوَ مصلتٌ

وَتَخشى الأَعادي بَأسَهُ وَهوَ مغمدُ

A sword hoped for his pardon and feared for his might when sheathed

Before him enemies’ blood nearly

تَكاد إِذا ما عايَنتهُ دِماؤُها

تَسيلُ وَيَزدادُ الخُشوعُ فتجمدُ

Flows and awe increases, freezing

Trained since youth with the discipline of horses

تَعوَّدَ زجر الخَيل مُذ كانَ يافِعاً

وَقامَ بِأَعباء العُلى وَهوَ أَمرَدُ

And assumed the burdens of sublimity while a teenager

An ally of piety from the Hashemite group

حَليف تُقىً مِن عُصبَةٍ هاشِميّةٍ

عَلى مِثلِها أولى الخَناصر تُعقدُ

For it the purest allegiances are bound

Bracelets shining in every place

قَساور مضّاؤون في كُلّ مَوطنٍ

إِذا أَتهم الشوسُ القَساور أَنجَدوا

When hardships befell, the shining bracelets supported

My praise goes on when I count their merits

يَطولُ ثَنائي إِذ أعدّد فَضلَهم

وَيقصرُ عَن إحصائِهِ المُتَعمّدُ

And falls short of fully enumerating

So O master whom fame has spread

فَيا أَيُّها المَولى الَّذي شاعَ ذِكرهُ

فَغَنّى بِهِ حادٍ وَأَطرَبَ مُنشدُ

Who the passionate and singers delight in

Your place above the two lights is of utmost height

مَكانك فَوقَ النيّرين تَرفّعاً

فَحَتّى مَتى تَعلو إِلى أَينَ تصعدُ

So to where, still, do you rise and ascend?

I see the supreme state when you were its sword

أَرى الدَولة العَلياء إِذ كُنت سَيفَها

بِوَجه العِدا إيّاك قامَت تجرّدُ

Against the enemies it stood stripping for battle

Your love with the marks of glory never

حبتك بِنيشان المَعالي فَلَم يَزَل

عَلامة مجدٍ بِالصَداقةِ تَشهدُ

Ceased as a sign of glory witnessed in friendship

It did not grant you power but rather

وَما قَلَّدتك العزَّ فيهِ وَإِنَّما

لَهُ بِكَ عزّ الفَخر أَمسَت تُقلّدُ

Through you power was honored to be granted

If you think me ignorant in my words, no wonder

فَإِن يَك مرتاباً بِقوليَ جاهل

فَلا عَجَباً أَن لا يَرى الشَمسَ أَرمَدُ

A blind man cannot see the sun

No surprise if you were gentle with the envious

وَلا بدع أن كدتَ الحَسود تَلطّفا

فَقَد يَغمر الماء السَعير فَتخمدُ

Water may quench blazing fire and extinguish

So say to the enemy: O confused one, die in your rage

فَقُل لِلعِدى يا بُهمُ موتوا بِغيظِكُم

فَلا عَيشكم صافٍ وَلا الدَهر مسعدُ

Neither your life pure nor fate prosperous

With ignorance do the envious wish to deceive?

أَبالجهلِ يَبغي الحاسِدون خَديعَةً

وَفي وَجهِهم ماءُ الريا يَتَرَدّدُ

On their faces the water of disgrace oscillates

My poetry is too lofty to descend to their lows

تَنَزَّه شِعري عَن أَسافل كُلَّما

يَمُرُّ بِفكري ذِكرها أتَنَهّدُ

Whenever the thought of them passes I sigh

My accord with them in the abode of righteousness is absolute

نَوالي لَها في مَوطن البرّ مُطلَق

وَقَلبي بِحَمل الضَيم عَنها مُقيَّدُ

While my heart's burden for their injustice remains confined

If not for my observance of the neighbor's sanctity between us

فَلولا رعائي حرمة الجار بَينَهُم

لَغادرتهم وَالصُبح كَاللَيل أَسوَدُ

I would leave them and dawn is as dark as night

With every generous one cloaked in glory

بِكُلِّ جَوادٍ مُكتَسي المَجد تحته

جَوادٌ مِن النجب السَلاهب أَجرَدُ

A generous gray stallion, stripped

I am the spear and arrow aimed at the enemy

أَنا الرُمح وَالسَهم المُسدّد لِلعِدى

وَدرع المَعالي وَالحسام المُجرّدُ

Shield of glory and bare sword

I am but all I say I am

وَما أَنا إِلّا كل ما أَنا قائِلٌ

وَما قُلت إِلّا بَعض ما فيّ يعهدُ

And say but some of what I know

In me a free soul not earth of lowliness

وَبي نَفس حُرٍّ لا تراب بحطّةٍ

مِن الخسفِ إِلّا أَوشَكَت تَتَصعّدُ

Except nearing ascent from ruin

Stalwartness that empowered so faced

عِصاميَّةٌ عزَّت فَلاقَت مِن الأَسا

مِنَ الدَهر ما لا يَمتريهِ التجلّدُ

From fate what cannot be endured with resilience

Challenges speak to me in darkness and alike

تحدّثني بِالخطب وَاللَيل مِثلُهُ

فَتوقظُ عَزمي وَالخليّون هُجَّدُ

Awakening my resolve while negligents slumber

I am not one to complain of time but

وَلَست بِمَن يَشكو الزَمان وَإِنَّما

أَفوهُ بِهِ مِن حَيث لا أَتَعَمَّدُ

Speak of it incidentally without intending

I indirectly criticized a group and

تَعرَّضت لِلتَعريض في أَمر معشر

وَلَست أُبالي أن يُراب المفنّدُ

Do not care if the critic is displeased

Whoever is of the nature of the noble, I

فمن يَكُ ذا طَبع حرونٍ فَإنَّني

بِما قُلتهُ إِيّاه أَعني وأقصدُ

Mean him in what I say and intend

Whoever is pure of heart, he is

وَمَن كانَ ذا قَلبٍ سليم فَإِنَّهُ

بَريءٌ وَشرّ الجاهِلين المُعربدُ

Innocent while the ignorant fool babbles

Lo the one distant from the eye, I

أَلا أَيُّها النائي عَن العَين إنَّني

أَراك بِقَلبي حَيثما أتفقّدُ

See you in my heart wherever I check

If from me you are distant, you have encompassed

لَئن كُنت عَنّي قَد بَعدت فَقَد حَوَت

سَجاياك فَضلاً وَصفه مِنكَ أَبعَدُ

Merit, its description from you more distant

You continue to rise in rank after rank

وَما زِلت تَرقى رتبة بَعد رُتبَةٍ

إِلى أَن غَدَت شَمس الضُحى لَكَ تحسدُ

Until the sun of dawn envies you

Congratulations. Lo the one entering the spring

هَنيئاً ألا يا وارد المنهل الَّذي

لِظمأى الأَماني مِنهُ يعسر موردُ

For the thirst of wishes from it the watering place is scarce

I see you overjoy whenever the branches shake

أَراك طَروباً كُلَّما اِهتَزَّتِ القَنا

كَما أَطرَب النَشوى الرَحيقُ المُبرَّدُ

As the nectar delights the warbling bird

We robed the days in garments of praise

خَلَعنا عَلى الأَيّام مِن حُلل الثَنا

بُروداً وَقُمنا لِلتَهاني نجدِّدُ

And stood to renew congratulations

Possessed me to say: yours is the glad tidings

وَهيّمني قَول البَشير لَكَ الهَنا

كَما هيّم الصَبَّ الحمامُ المغرِّدُ

As the pigeons’ cooing possesses the one who announces good news

So I composed it a chaste ode and it articulated

فأنشأتها بكراً عروباً فَأَعربَت

بِحَمد عَلَيهِ لي أَرى الناس تحمدُ

In his praise, that I see people praising

It stood in thanks to God at the door of the glorious

وَقامَت بِشُكر اللَه في باب ماجدٍ

عَلَيهِ لِواءُ النَصر ما زال يعقدُ

Upon him the banner of victory remains bound

Your eyes, she nearly makes other brides renounce

فَهاكَ عَروساً كُلَّما جليت عَلى

عُيونك كادَت بِالعَرائس تزهدُ

A shapely date palm nurtured in the meadow of propriety

For her virtue is origin and determination the pillar

رَبيبة خدر قَد ربت في رُبى النهى

لَها الفَضل أَصلٌ وَالشَهامة محتدُ

The daughter of one who mastered every verse jewels

And not all that is built of poetry is good

بنت فَأَجادَت كلّ بَيت جَواهراً

وَما كُلُّ ما يبنى مِن الشعر جيّدُ

If Bilqis had seen of its structures

She would have said: a mansion paved of rubies

فَلو أَنّ بلقيساً رَأَت مِن بيوتها

لَقالَت مِن الياقوت صرح ممرَّدُ

If recited one day to one hurt

By your absence we said: worry is dispelled

وَلَو تليت يَوماً عَلى من أَجنّهُ

بِعادُكَ خِلنا ماردَ الهمّ يطردُ

So ascend the ranks of might, O you whose name

For him a lineage in which adherence is completed

فَثِب دَرجات العزّ يا مَن سميّهُ

لَهُ نسبٌ فيهِ يتمُّ التَشهّدُ

And trust in whom you hope when standing supplicating

Speaking of your mention: You we worship

وَثق بِالَّذي تَرجو إِذا قُمت داعياً

تُخاطبه بالذكر إِيّاكَ نَعبُدُ

For the one who gave Solomon his request

Will give you what you hope for, O Muhammed

فَإِنّ الَّذي أَعطى سُليمان سُؤلهُ

سَيُعطيك ما أَمّلتهُ يا محمّدُ

So plunge into every sea and collect the pearls of praise

And return successful, for return is best

فَخض كُلّ لجٍّ وَاِلتقط دُرر الثَنا

وَعُد راشداً بِالفوز فالعود أحمَدُ
