يا نسيماً حلا بحال المرورِ

حاملاً عَرفَ طيب روض الزهورِ

O breeze, so sweet as you pass by,

bearing the fragrant perfume of a garden of flowers,

خذ سلاماً من المحبّ لشهمٍ

قد تسمى محمّد الغندور

take a greeting from the lover to a noble man

who bears the name Muhammad al-Ghandur.

واهده دعوةً بها يجلب الخي

ر وينفى الشقا عن المعسور

And offer him a prayer by which good is brought

and misery driven from one beset by hardship—

تترجّى له الكريمَ تعالى

غاية النجح في جميع الأمور

beseeching the Exalted, the Generous, on his behalf

for the utmost success in every affair.

قد أتاني كتابه ببهاءٍ

لاح كالنور في خلال السطور

His letter came to me in splendor,

gleaming like light between the lines,

بحروفٍ كالليل فيها معانٍ

لمعنَّىً قد أشرقت كالبدور

in letters black as night, with meanings within

whose significance shone like full moons.

دام مهديه في جمالٍ وعزٍّ

وكمالٍ وغبطةٍ وسرور

May its sender abide in beauty and honor,

in perfection, delight, and joy,

ما استدامت له هدية مولا

ه بتوفيقه لسبل الأجور

as long as his Lord’s gift endures for him,

granting him success along the paths of reward.

منه أرجو قبول عذري لديه

حيث أنّي عن شكره في قصور

From him I hope my apology will be accepted,

for I fall short of giving him due thanks.

ليس عندي أهديه إلا دعاء

من فوآد مدى المدى المكسور

I have nothing to offer him but a prayer

from a heart forever broken.
