1. نديمنا ساقي الندامى

    في حان أكؤس المدامه

    Our boon companion, cupbearer to the boon companions,

    amid tavern goblets brimming with wine:

  2. بكرٌ تسمّت ببنت كرمٍ

    تُجلَى وتَجلِي لنا الكرامه

    a virgin who named herself the Daughter of the Vine,

    is unveiled—and unveils dignity for us.

  3. يا حبّذاها عروس حسنٍ

    كم حرّكت من شجٍ غرامه

    How lovely she is, a bride of beauty!

    How often she has stirred the heartsore to passion!

  4. وكم رمت باللحاظ سهماً

    فصاد وجداً ظباء رامه

    How many arrows she has loosed with her glances,

    and in ardor they hunted the gazelles of Rāmah!

  5. لله رعبوبةٌ خرودٌ

    تهزّ من قدّها قوامه

    By God, what a tender, coy maiden—

    she sways a figure of willowy stature.

  6. تخجل بدر التمام حسناً

    وتفضح الغصنَ لينَ قامه

    In beauty she puts the full moon to shame,

    and shames the bough in the suppleness of her bearing.

  7. تُدعَى بنجدٍ وتعزى فخراً

    بين البرايا إلى تهامه

    She is named in Najd and proudly traced,

    among all creation, to Tihāmah.

  8. شمسٌ بدت من سما المعالي

    خير الموالي زين القيامه

    A sun appeared from the heaven of exalted rank:

    the best of masters, adornment of the Resurrection.

  9. أجلِّ نورٍ إذا تبدّى

    تظلّه إن مشى غمامه

    His light shines clearest whenever he appears;

    a cloud shades him whenever he walks—

  10. السيّد المصطفى المفدّى

    قطب الهدى صاحب العمامه

    the Master, the Chosen One, the dearly ransomed,

    the pivot of guidance, wearer of the turban.

  11. صلّى عليه السلام دوماً

    والآل ما ناحت الحمامه

    May blessings and peace be upon him forever,

    and upon the Family, as long as the dove laments.

  12. وبات بدر التمام عبداً

    لنوره أو غدا غلامه

    The full moon passed the night as a slave

    to his light—or else became his page.
