سل في الظلام أخاك البدر عن سهري

I spent the night moaning in complaint and drinking

The bitter draughts of early youth to my fill

والجفن مذ فاض بحراً صرت أغرق في

دمعي وأنشق ريّا نفحِك العطر

Since my eyelids overflowed like a sea, I drowned

In my tears and split open with your fragrant breath

حتّى أُخيّل أنّي شاربٌ ثملٌ

أتيه مثلك في دلٍّ وفي خفر

Until I imagined myself a reveler made drunk

By one like you, in affection and chastity

إنّي بخدّك مع ثغرٍ ولحظك لي

بين الرياض وبين الكأس والوتر

With your cheek and a mouth, and your glances to me

Are as cups and lutes and lyrical strings
