1. خذا حيث أمت عاديات السوانحِ

    وكونا ببعدٍ عن بوار البوارحِ

    Take me wherever my fate leads

    And let us be far from the dens of wild beasts

  2. وإن جزتما روضاً صَباه تنفّست

    بألطف أنفاسٍ وأزكى روائح

    If we pass through a garden at dawn when it breathes

    With the gentlest of breezes and sweetest fragrances

  3. فعوجا على أفيائه وعيونه

    وما سال منها فوق تلك الأباطح

    Turn towards its streams and springs

    But let not a tear fall on those slopes

  4. فذلك وادي جلّق من ترفّعت

    فضائلها عن كلّ مثنٍ ومادح

    For that is Wadi Jalq where virtues rise

    Above all price and every praiser

  5. ولا سيّما لمّا تسامت بروجُها

    بأكمل بدرٍ في سما الفضل لائح

    Especially when its mansions reach their peak

    Like the full moon in the sky of merit shining bright

  6. فباهتٌ به الأفلاك طراً فأصبحت

    جميع الورى تثني عليها بصالح

    Dimming the orbits, the whole world

    Praises it for its righteousness

  7. وقد رقصت فيها جواري مياهها

    بجنك ودف عند لحن الصوادح

    Where its water maidens danced

    To the tune of lutes and drums

  8. ولم لا وقد فازت بأكرم نازلٍ

    وأعذب بحرٍ بالفضائل طافح

    Why not, when it has won the most noble abode

    And the sweetest sea abundant in virtues

  9. يقيسونه بالبحر جهلاً بفضله

    وهل يستوي العذب الفرات بمالح

    They compare it to the sea in ignorance of its merit

    Can the sweet Euphrates equal the briny?

  10. تسربل جلباب الكمال فلم يدع

    طريقاً لأقوال العدوّ المكاشح

    It wraps itself in the robe of perfection leaving

    No way for the words of the hostile critic

  11. وقد بات نجماً للهداية ثاقباً

    رفيعاً ويعلو النجم عن نبح نابح

    It has become a penetrating star of guidance

    Lofty, while stars cower from the barking of dogs

  12. جوادٌ جرى في حلبة الفضل فانتهى

    إلى قصبات السبق قبل الجحاجح

    A steed that raced in the track of merit and came first

    To the finish line before the other racers

  13. إذا هزّ خطّي اليراع عدلته

    بخير سماكٍ في الكواكب رامح

    When I wave my pen if it strays

    I straighten it with the best ink amid the stars

  14. وقد ساد من سادوا بخفّة روحه

    وميزان لبٍّ بالمكارم راجح

    It has excelled those who excelled with its easy spirit

    And scales weighed down with generosity

  15. وكفٍّ تكفّ الفقر عن كلّ بائسٍ

    وتسخو بها كفّ البخيل المصافح

    Hands that spare the poor from poverty

    And pour freely unlike the miser's grasping hands

  16. سحاب ندى يُستصغر البحرُ عندها

    ويفنى بها دمع العيون النواضح

    A cloud of dew diminishing the sea

    And vanishing the tears of weeping eyes

  17. فيا أيّها المولى الّذي شاع فضله

    وبات كفجرٍ في البريّة لائح

    O Master whom merit made famous

    And appeared like the dawn in the desert shining bright

  18. أهنّيك بل نفسي أهنّي لأنّني

    بلقياك قد زال الجوى من جوانحي

    I congratulate you, or rather I congratulate myself

    For meeting you has lifted anxiety from my heart

  19. فأهلاً وسهلاً مرحباً خير قادمٍ

    قدمت ففزنا بالمنى والمنايح

    Welcome, greetings, blessed is your arrival

    You came and we gained wishes and delights

  20. ونافقنا الدهر الخؤون فجاءنا

    ذلولاً ضئيلاً جانحاً غير جامح

    While we were estranged from fortune you came

    Submissive, weak, gentle, not violent

  21. ويا طالما قد عضّنا منه ناجذٌ

    رمى الله أنياباً له بالقوادح

    How often it fiercely bit us

    May God break its teeth with goblets

  22. وما انفكَّ إلّا والقريحة كاسمها

    وحدّ ظُباه جارحٌ لجوارحي

    It did not cease until, true to its name*

    A backbiter wounded my heart

  23. فسامح محبّاً حال دون قريضه

    جريض عراه بارك غير نازح

    Forgive lovingly one who blocked its slander

    A nude wretch, bless him, do not drive away

  24. فمثلك من يبدي الجميل تكرّماً

    ويستر بالحسنى وجوهَ القبائح

    One like you benevolently shows kindness

    And covers up disgraces with virtues
