1. مذ رأيت العاصي أطعت لربّي

    وإليه أنبتُ من كلّ ذنبِ

    Since I saw the disobedient one obey his Lord

    And turn to Him from every sin

  2. قد صفا كاللجين للعين يروي ال

    حسن صافٍ كصفو قلب المحبّ

    His heart became as clear as polished mirror

    Quenching with pure beauty the lover’s thirst

  3. بوفاقٍ تجري المسائل فيه

    في محل الخلاف من علم غيب

    With harmony running through it

    Where difference dwelled in hidden knowledge

  4. كلّما مرّ باللطافة يحلو

    يهدي صبّاً صافي الزلال لصبّ

    Whenever gentleness passes it becomes sweet

    Guiding a limpid, refreshing breeze to the youth

  5. فهو شمسٌ قد أشرق الروض منه

    أنجم الزهر قد توارت بقرب

    He is a sun whose radiance lights the meadow

    Whose stars of flowers fade in his proximity

  6. خرّ لله بالصبابة طوعاً

    وهو عاصٍ فاعجب لعاص محبّ

    He bowed to God willingly in his prime

    Yet he disobeyed, how strange is the beloved disobedient one!

  7. وإليه خرّت غصون الروابي

    حيثما كان للأصول المربي

    The tendrils of the meadow bowed down to him

    Wherever he, the nurturing root, may be

  8. كم لطفلٍ لها يحرّك مهداً

    فغدا ساكناً برفعٍ ونصب

    How gently he would rock many a cradle

    To quiet the stirring babe in rhyme and rhythm

  9. قد ترّبّى في حجره بدلالٍ

    يتهادى بالرقص تيهاً بعجب

    The child was reared tenderly in his lap

    Dancing playfully, wandering in awe

  10. ويعاطيه ثدي درٍّ فيا لل

    لَه درّ الرضيع من حسن شرب

    Given the teat of precious milk - such delight!

    The darling drinks the milk of his beauty

  11. طاف يسعى صفاً بأركان حمصٍ

    حرماً حلّه بأمنٍ يلبّي

    He circled Safa, striving in pilgrimage

    Made the sanctuary secure, crying “Here I am!”

  12. قائلاً طيبتي علقت باذيا

    لِ علاها وتلك طيبي وطبّي

    Saying, “My scent clings to my love”

    Hers is the most sublime, and mine the remedy

  13. ورباها مربى ورودي ولم أح

    سب سوى ما حللت مربع خصبي

    She raised him, and no nursery was as flowery

    If my lovers sought a pleasant stroll

  14. فإذا رمت عاشقي نزهة الطَر

    ف فطر فوق طِرف عينٍ وقلب

    On a meadow over a tender eye and heart

    Grasping the train of Homs, clinging

  15. وتمسك بمسك أذيال حمص

    وتعلّق مثلي بجنّة قرب

    To a paradise of nearness like me

    Every disobedient one who seeks her protection

  16. كلّ عاصً يلوذ في ذيلها الطا

    هر طوعاً لم يلق وصمة ذنب

    Willingly, without stain of sin

    She is my neighbor from whom I sought refuge

  17. جارتي واستجرت فيها وإنّي

    خير جارٍ وحبّها الدهر حسبي

    His love forever suffices me
