1. أسيرُ وقلبي في الغرام أسيرُ

    وكل عنى يرضي الحبيب يسيرُ

    I am captive, and my heart captive of love

    And all my care that pleases the beloved is easy

  2. فما بالها ذات الوشاح تلومني

    ولم يبد مني في الغرام فتورُ

    So why does she of graceful veil blame me

    When no coolness in love from me appeared?

  3. وما أنا من يقوى على حمل جورها

    ولو أن رضوى مهجتي وثبيرُ

    I cannot bear her tyranny,

    And even if the solace of my soul and pride

  4. أكفكف وكف الدمع أن مر ذكرها

    وعندي بذكرها الأنام تسيرُ

    Restrain, restrain the tears if her mention passes

    And at her mention people walk

  5. فأن ذكروا يوماً سعاداً وزينباً

    فاحسب ليلي بالسلام تشيرُ

    So if they mentioned a day, Saad and Zainab

    Reckon my night bids farewell

  6. كأن جميع الكائنات بشخصها

    وباسمك يا ليلي الأمور تدورُ

    As if all creatures in her persona

    And by your name, O Laila, things revolve

  7. دعوني وشأني لا وقيتم عواذلي

    فأني على ذل الغرام صبورُ

    Leave me and my affairs, O critics

    For I am patient with the humiliation of love

  8. فما ساءني عزل العذول ولائمي

    كقول صديق أنني لنذيرُ

    I was not saddened by the estrangement of censurers

    Like the words of a friend that I am a warner

  9. وتحويل وجه الدهر عني كأنني

    قتلت لهُ أبناً أو عليهِ أجورُ

    And the turning of fate from me as if I

    Killed its son for it or have dues

  10. فلست بمن أخشاه دعه معاندي

    وما بيننا حتى القيامة سورُ

    So I am not one who fears, leave my opponent

    And nothing between us until the resurrection is a wall

  11. وهل أخشي يوماً أذاهُ وبأسهُ

    وجودت مولاي الوزير نصيرُ

    And do I fear one day his harm and violence?

    When my patron the minister is a supporter

  12. وزيرٌ شهيرٌ فاضلٌ وابن فاضل

    مشيرٌ خطيرٌ للفخار سميرُ

    A renowned, virtuous minister and son of virtuous

    An influential counselor for the honorable, a mark

  13. وزير لهُ جبهة الدهر منة

    إيادٍ نداها للبرية نورُ

    A minister for whom the forehead of time is a boon

    Assistance that illuminated the wilderness a light

  14. وزير علا فوق السماكين رتبة

    وتحت لواه الأفضلون تسيرُ

    A minister whose rank rose above the highest

    And under his banner the best walk

  15. إذا حركت يمناه يوماً يراعة

    تلوح من السحر الحلال سطورُ

    If he moved his right hand one day in earnest

    The scripts of lawful magic shine from the dawn

  16. أمام ترى كنز المعارف صدره

    ولا رصدٌ فيهِ وليس خفيرُ

    Before you see the treasure of knowledge his chest

    With no observation in it and no guard

  17. بأي مكان حل حلَّت مهابةٌ

    عجيب وكلٌ مادح وشكورُ

    In any place he settled, awe descended

    Wondrous, and all praising and grateful

  18. يناظر أمر الداخلية عدلهُ

    وفيهِ تساوى كابر وصغيرُ

    He oversees the judiciary, its justice

    And in it senior and junior are equal

  19. يقوم وقانون الأساس بكفهِ

    ينظم ملكاً وهو فيهِ جديرُ

    He stands and the constitution in his palm

    Organizing a kingdom in which he is fit

  20. يخوض بحار المشكلات بهمة

    ويخرج منها والفؤَاد قريرُ

    He plunges into seas of problems with resolve

    And emerges while the heart is content

  21. خبير يرى مستقبل الدهر حاضراً

    كذاك كرامات الرجال تصيرُ

    An expert who sees the future present

    Thus the miracles of men come to pass

  22. نشير إليه بالبنان لأننا

    لا وحد ذا العصر الجديد نشيرُ

    We gesture to him with fingers for we

    Have none but him in this new age we gesture to

  23. يعز وجودٌ مثل جودة في الورى

    وهل مثل مولانا الوزير وزيرُ

    Greatness like his bounty is rare in the world

    And is there like our minister a minister?

  24. إذا ما دعونا جودةً في ملمة

    يجيب ندانا مسرعاً ويجيرُ

    If we called bounty in time of trials

    Our equal answers quickly and rescues

  25. أيا كوكباً في الشرق قد ضاءَ لامعاً

    لك اللّه والغرب البعيد ينيرُ

    O planet in the east shining bright

    God is yours and the distant west lights

  26. فأن لم تسر أقلامنا في مديحهِ

    فتاريخهُ في الخافقين يسيرُ

    If our pens do not excel in praising him

    Then his history in the horizons flows

  27. أمولاي إني في الفصاحة قاصر

    وفي حصر معناك الفصيح قصيرُ

    My patron, I in eloquence fall short

    And in containing your eloquent meaning am small

  28. فأعجزُ عن إحصاءِ ما قد حويتهُ

    ولو أن كلى السنٌ وثغورُ

    So I fail to enumerate what you contained

    Though my lifetime is advanced and my evenings near

  29. أمولاي إني قد أنخت مطيتي

    ببابك فاسمح والكريم غفورُ

    My patron, I have saddled my steed

    At your door, so pardon, and the generous forgives
