أَليومَ ضاءَت لمحةُ السِّرِّ الخَفي
جَهراً وضاعت نَفحةُ البرِّ الحَفِي
Today the glimpse of the hidden secret shone openly
And the whiff of hidden righteousness was lost
اليوم قد حُسِر الغِطاءُ ولاح لِل
أَبصارِ ما قد كانَ أَضأَلَ مختفي
Today the cover was lifted and what had been most hidden
Appeared to the eyes
اليوم قد ظَهَرَ الالهُ لعبدهِ
لقَبُول صَبغتهِ ولم يستنكفِ
Today God appeared to His servant
To accept His baptism and did not refuse
اليومَ قُدِّسَتِ المِياهُ وبُورِكَت
وسَقامُها الزَمِن العُقامُ بهِ شُفِي
Today the waters were sanctified and blessed
And their sickness over time was healed
اليومَ صوتُ الآب يُعلِنُ أَنَّ ذا
من قد سُرِرتُ بهِ وهذا ابني الصفي
Today the voice of the Father proclaims that this
Is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased
والروحُ حلَّ عليهِ منهبطاً بنَو
عِ حَمامةٍ بيضاءَ ذاتِ تَرَفرُفِ
And the Spirit descended on Him alighting as
A white, fluttering dove
من بعد أعوامٍ ثلاثينَ انطَوَت
في طاعة الأَبَوينِ مريمَ يُوسُف
After thirty years passed
In obedience to parents, Mary and Joseph
وافى إلى الأُردُنِّ يبغي صَبغةً
من عبدهِ ذاك الذي منهُ اصطُفِي
He came to the Jordan seeking baptism
From that servant of His who was chosen
وانسابَ ما بينَ الخُطاةِ كخاطئٍ
مما يُعَدُّ لتوبةٍ لم يَعتَفِ
And flowed among the sinners like a sinner
Preparing for repentance he had not yet made
خلعَ المسيحُ وِشاحَهُ في شطِّهِ
يبغي العِمادَ كتائبٍ متنظفِ
Christ took off His cloak at the bank
Seeking baptism like well-adorned troops
مُذ شامَ يوحنا النبيُّ بانهُ وافاهُ
مكتتماً كمن لم يُعرَفِ
Ever since John the prophet secretly recognized Him
Like one who had not been recognized
نادى بإِيماءِ الاصابعِ معلناً
بسَماعِ شعبٍ ذي فُؤادٍ اغلفِ
He proclaimed with a wave of his fingers announcing
To a people with deaf hearts
هذا هُوَ الحَمَلُ الكريمُ الرافعُ ال
أَوزارَ أجمَعها ومن عنها يَفِي
This is the precious Lamb who lifts
All burdens and absolves from them
هذا عنيتُ بانهُ بعدي يجي
ءُ وأَنَّهُ ما زالَ قبلي وهوَ فِي
This is the one I meant who comes after me
Yet He was before me while still in the hidden
من لَستُ حقّاً مستحقاً حَلَّ شِسعِ
حِذائِهِ بل إِن فيهِ تَشَرُّفي
I am not worthy to loosen the strap
Of His sandal, indeed it is an honor for me
اني أُعمِّدكم بماءِ طُهُوركم
لأُعِدَّكم فيهِ لحالٍ اشرفِ
I baptize you with purifying water
To prepare you for a most honorable state
هيَ صبغةُ الإِبنِ الوحيدِ بروحهِ ال
قُدُسيّ والنارِ التي لا تنطفي
It is the baptism of the only Son in His
Holy Spirit and unquenchable fire
أَنَّي الهي تعتلي مني يدٌ
من فوق هامِك ذي الجَلال المُرجِفِ
My God, why is a hand reaching down from me
Above Your revered, awe-inspiring head?
فيما أُنقِّي عينَ يَنبوعِ النَقا
وبما أُعمِّدُ لُجَّةَ الطُهرِ الوَفي
As I purify the spring of sincerity
And baptize with most dependable purity
اني لفي عَوَزٍ اليك وانت تأ
تيني بكل تخضُّعٍ وتلطُّفٍ
I am in such need before You while You
Come to me with all humility and gentleness
فاجابهُ دَع عنكَ كل تمنُّعٍ
وبما اصطنعتَ بهِ الوَرى لا تأَنَفِ
So He answered him “give up all reluctance
And do not refuse what you have made people accustomed to
قَمِنٌ بنا أَنَّا نكمِّلُ كلَّ عد
لٍ تقتدي فيهِ الأَنامُ وتقتفي
We must complete all righteousness that people emulate and pursue”
The waters of the sea stood still when they saw
وَقَفَت مياهُ البحر لما أَبصَرَت
في الناسِ مُبدِعَها بذاك المَوقِفِ
Among the people its Originator in that position
They turned back on themselves and held together
فاءت على أدبارِها وتماسكت
عن جَريها ومن العجائبِ ان تَفِي
From flowing on, and it is wondrous for them to turn away
So the water in the Jordan fled
فالماءُ في الأُردُنِّ وَلَّى هارباً
من هَولِ عِزَّتهِ ولم يتوقَّفِ
From the awesomeness of His glory and did not hesitate
The extension of the water ebbed in waves of awe
قَصُرَ امتدادُ الماءِ جَزرَ مَهابةٍ
وحَراكُهُ قال السُكونُ لهُ قِفِ
And its stirring was told by stillness to stop
The stream of Elijah ceased its flow
أَوِشاجُ ايليّا بهِ فمِياهُهُ
مثلَ اسمهِ الأُردُنِّ لمَّا تُصرَفِ
As did the Jordan when it was redirected
Or is this the son of Nun crossing the Jordan
أَم ذا ابنُ نُونٍ جائزُ الأُردُنِّ بال
تابوتِ فالأمواهُ ذاتُ توقُّفِ
With the Ark while the waters had stopped?
Or is this Elisha the prophet whose affair
ام ذاكَ أَليَشَعُ النبيُّ وشانهُ
صلحُ المياهِ من الفَسادِ المُتلِفُ
Was to heal waters from destructive corruption?
God appeared so every valley fills
ظهرَ الالهُ فكلُّ وادٍ يمتلي
وتدينُ اتلاع النُهى المتصلِّفِ
And newly sprouting groves bow down
God appeared so O covering stars
ظهر الالهُ فيا نجومُ تستَّرِي
من هولِ عِزَّتهِ ويا شمسُ اختَفِي
Flee from the awesomeness of His glory, and O sun hide!
God appeared so O spacious earth, tremble
ظهرَ الالهُ فيا بسيطةُ زلزلي
فَرَقاً وايتها السماواتُ ارجُفي
And split apart O heavens, and shake!
From Bethlehem shone a full moon
من بيت لحمٍ ضاءَ بدراً كاملاً
يُزرِي البدورَ فنورُهُ لم يُخسَفِ
To give light while its light has not waned
From a feeding trough that used to shelter His sun
من مِذوَدٍ قد كان مُبزَغُ شمسِهِ
يا شمسَ قُدسٍ ضَؤها لم يُكسَفِ
O sun of Holiness whose light was never eclipsed!
O land of Zebulon, my secret so exult and rejoice!
يا أرضَ زابُلُّونَ سرّي وافرحي
يا ارضَ نفتاليمَ نادي واهتِفي
O land of Naphtali call out and cheer!
Wilderness of Jordan giving water so blossom
برّيَّةَ الأُردُنِّ سقياً فاجذَلي
وبصوتِ داعي البِشر سَمعَكِ شَنِّفي
And with the herald’s call to glad tidings turn green!
His awesomeness made the twisting dragons sneeze
أَنفَت مَهابتُهُ التنانينَ التي
أَنفَت بعادك نَفيَ ما لا ينتفي
That expelled the remotest of the remote
Evil things in their lairs were condemned
صالت على الأَصلال في وَكَناتها
نِقَمٌ بها صلَّت صليلَ المَشرَفي
Punished with clattering chains of the glorious
Let the trees of the thickets rejoice when dew
ولتبتهج شَجَرُ الغِياضِ إذا النَدى
رَوّى الصَدى واخضلَّ كل مُجفَّفِ
Satisfies the echo and soaks all dried out
And your meadows sing praising the lilies
ورِياضُكِ الغَنَّاءُ تُزهِرُ سُوسَنا
والآسُ يُؤسِي كلَّ قلبٍ مُدنِفِ
Glorifying every heart complaining of being spurned
Your fragrant flowers spread their scent
وزهورِك الفيحاءُ تَنشُرُ عَرفَها
وتميسُ تِيهاً بالقَوامِ الأَهيَفِ
And the myrtle wanders like a fleeing gazelle
For in your plains an Ancient Lord
إذ في بَواديكِ ابتدى مستأنَفاً
رَبٌّ قديمٌ ليسَ بالمُستأنَفِ
Without beginning has begun anew
Coming to bury the sin of Adam, fulfilling
وافى ليرحَضَ إِثمَ آدمَ موفياً
أَوفى الوفاءِ ووعدُهُ لم يُخلَفِ
The most faithful promise that was not broken
O offspring of the ancient lineage, stop your weeping!
يا عِترةَ الجَدِّ القديم دَعِي البُكا
كُفّي عن النَوحِ المبرّحِ وانكَفي
Cease your lugubrious wailing and long faces!
Salvation has come to us removing its harm
وَرَد الخَلاصُ لنا واصدرَ ردؤُهُ
نفيَ الردى ووجوبَ ردِّ المنتفي
Dispelling evil and necessity of dispelling what must be dispelled
He ransomed, guided, then healed a nation
افدى وارشدَ ثم أَشفَى أُمَّةً
لم تُفدَ لولاهُ وتُهدَ وتشتفِ
Who without Him would not have been ransomed, guided, or healed
He is the Redeemer, the Teacher, and the Healer
فَهُوَ المخلِّصُ والمعلمُ والطبيبُ
ثلثةٌ نَغنى بِهِنَّ ونكتفي
Three we suffice with and are content
He whom I disobeyed the order of my early passion for
هذا الذي عاصَيتُ أمرَ صَبابتي
من أجلِهِ وأَطَعتُ نَهيَ تَعَفُّفي
His sake I obeyed the warning of my chastity
I made the fetters of endless lust into
وجعلتُ قيد الآبداتِ من الهَوى
حُبِيّهِ واستعذبتُ فيهِ تكلُّفي
My love of Him and found its trials sweet
O You whom we gained through the guidance of righteousness
يا من تسنَّمنا بهِ سُدَدَ العَلا
اذ حازها بتواضُعٍ لم يوصفِ
For You attained it with unmatched humility
You made known what had been immersed in oblivion
عرَّفتَ ما كانَ قد قبلُ من الوَرَى
مُستغرقَ التنكيرِ لم يتعرَّفِ
To people unacknowledged and unrecognized
You cultivated people’s character with the Cultivator of Righteousness
ثقَّفتَ اخلاقَ الوَرى بمثقِّفِ البِرِّ
الذي قد فاقَ كل مثقِّفِ
Who surpasses every cultivator
You cut down the towering haughtiness
وجَدَعتَ عِرنِينَ التشامُخ خافضاً
بِعَلا الهَلاكِ بسيف عدلٍ مُرهَفِ
Lowering with the sword of just retribution sharpened
And You brought us near to Eden from which
ومنحَتنا الزُلفى إلى عَدنَ التي
بالعدلِ قِدماً آدمٌ منها نُفِي
Justly, Adam was exiled from long ago
Clothing us with the garment of innocence right away
وكَسَوتَنا ثوب البَرارةِ عاجلاً
إذ شفَّنا التسويفُ غير مسوّفِ
Since delay did not agree with us
You bonded us to You when You stripped falsehood
أَلفتنا بك حينَ جَرَّدت الرَدَى
فأَقمتَ بالتجريد خير مؤَلَّفِ
Establishing by such stripping the best composition
You compassionately mended cracks in our hearts
ورفأتَ صَدعَ قُلُوبِنا بترؤفٍ
وحُنُوِّ قلبٍ بالمحبَّة أَرأَفِ
With care and affection more kind than any
You erased the shadows of misguidance with guidance
ومحوتَ اظلالَ الضَلالةِ بالهُدى
ورفأتَ ما لولا رِفاؤُك ما رُفِي
And mended what without Your mending would not be mended!
So to You belongs praise as long as those who praise
فلك المديحُ يضوعُ عَرفُ كِبائِهِ
من كل هاتفةٍ وما لم تهتِفِ
From every praiser rise, even those who do not praise You
To You belongs prostration with eternal blessing
ولك السجودُ مع الكَرامةِ سرمداً
ما لا يُكَفَّ ولا يُقالُ لهُ كفي
Without stop, without saying “enough!”
