شِرَّةُ الأَسبابِ في كُلِّ امرِئٍ

قُوَّةُ الشَهوةِ ثُمَّ الغَضَبِ

The causes of evil in every man

Are lust and wrath’s dominion

فاقطَعَنَّ الأصل تأمَن فَرعَهُ

كلُّ حالٍ سُبِّبَت من سَبَبِ

So cut off the root, be safe from the branch

Each state proceeded from a cause

مبدأُ الآلامِ تانِ احذَرهُما

تنجُ من جمرٍ شديدِ اللَهَبِ

The origin of sorrows lies in two - beware them

And you’ll be saved from fierce flames

كانَتا في آدمٍ من قبلِ أَن

حُطَّ من عالي سُمُوِّ الرُتَبِ

They were in Adam before he fell

From his lofty station sublime

تحتَ حُكمِ العقلِ في طاعاتهِ

حاكماً في جُندهِ لم يُغصَبِ

Under reason’s rule obedient

Ruling his soldiers, none forced by crime

إذ عَصَى اللَهَ عَصَتهُ فاغتدَى

في نِزاعٍ دائِمٍ مَع نَصَبِ

But disobeying God, they raged unrestrained

Ever at war with hardship and toil

فورثناها بعدلٍ واجبٍ

أَوجَبَ الأرثَ بأُمٍّ وأَبِ

We inherited them by justice binding

Mandated descent from father and mother

كجيازي وبنيهِ وَرِثُوا

بَرَصَ الوالدِ عن حكم النبِي

As Gehazi’s sons inherited

Their father’s pallor by decree of the Prophet
